Has anyone booked a hunt through Shoshone Wilderness / John Andre? I am not sure how but I started getting his newsletter a while back, which has lists of hunts. From my understanding he is the advertisement and handles the business side for guides or landowners. He has a hunt that I may be interested in listed and would love to hear from others who might have booked through him before and what their experience was.

I am normally a DIY guy but I am looking for a hunt that my not so in shape Dad and I can do together and that is somewhat affordable. Thanks for your input!

Did you draw a tag in WY? That's how you would get on the mailing lists for outfitters.

I applied for a Wyoming tag this year but did not draw, hence why I am still looking for a place to hunt Elk!

Yeah it was the 2 archery hunters, same email.

I booked an elk hunt through John for this Fall. That hunt is a big reason that I have joined this site instead of continuing to be an observer.

As far as John goes, from what I told him I was looking for I feel like he has pointed me in the right direction. Any time I have emailed him he has been very quick to respond. Being a Michigan guy that hunts archery and upland birds the whole idea of booking elk was overwhelming. There is a lot to choose from, but John had some hunts that fit my criteria(reasonable price/basic amenities/high opportunity at any bull) and he was also quick to respond when I inquired about gear, guns, ammo, etc.

Now, my attitude may change if the hunt doesn't go as planned and the reasons things don't go well are things that can be controlled by the outfitter, but based on what I've heard from John and the outfitter references I don't think that will be the case. My major concern based on all my discussions is my ability to perform when the situation presents itself.

You can't find much about John online, only the story of him losing his caribou camp because the Canadian gov. shut down the hunt. That created a lot of issues for him from how it sounds.

His site brings up a good point, a lot of great outfitters are farmers/ranchers/etc first, then outfitters second. That was something I hadn't thought about but in the case of the guy I booked through is very true.

Are these hunts for Wyoming? I thought you had to draw a tag first, that there weren't outfitter set-aside tags. I don't do outfitted hunts so I'm out of that loop. I just know when I drew my Wyoming general tag last year that I got a ton of flyers and emails from outfitters.

Personally no experience but A friend of mine booked a rifle hunt thru him in Idaho last year. I believe it was the Selway. He didn’t kill but the other hunter in camp did. Said he was happy with the experience and much happier than an outfitter he used in NM for a unit 15 muzzy hunt that he booked direct.

Is it Shoshone Lodge Outfitters in Cody, WY? If so, I know some of their guides, the Martoglio's, and it is a killer operation. Awesome accommodations from the lodge to packing in on horses for late season hunts. Find Josh Martoglio on Facebook he has photo albums with the trophies they hammer.
