Dumb question, but I'm trying to compare the size of my 5900 to other bags so I have an idea of their size..

The description on SG's website says its 4300" in bivy mode, and has a 5400" main bag (5900 with the 500" lid)..

Does bivy mode mean without the lid? So when the top is cinched down and I have the lid on, its 4800? Or does bivy include the lid, so when I have the bag cinched down and no lid, its 3800?

My understanding is that the SG naming scheme (i.e. 5900, 6400) indicates the volume including a lid. However, Exo's naming scheme does not include the lid capacity. So the Exo 4800 has 5200 cubic inches with a lid.

That's my understanding with SGs names as well.. so the volumes in your pictures you posted would go 4300, 4800, and 5900?

Yep, something like that. The buckle that secures the top in bivy mode has some extra length to it though so you're not really "locked in" at 4300. You can kind of use as much of the top section (the neck?) of the bag as needed and still secure with a buckle over the top. It would be susceptible to rain at a certain point of extention though. So without a lid, you could have anywhere from 4300 to 5200 cubic inches of space in the bag.

For a 6 day mule deer hunt this year I probably used 4600 cubic inches of the space inside the bag. And that included a full bag of deer cane for my cameras.

On a related note, can the lid be on when using the load shelf? In the examples above the bivy mode with lid could that expand out to use load shelf? Not entirely clear to me what straps are going where. when load shelf is used.

Thanks! I really like the look of the new Col 4800 so I'm trying to compare the size of it to the different "modes" of the 5900 so I know approximately where it falls. I'm just not sure its something I would use that I can't already use the 5900 for.

I wish they would make that Col bag/pocket layout in a 2800-3000" bag.

Cornfed…If you are looking at different brands for your comparison, it may be a mute point. I think these companies must use different media when measuring. Kifaru bags seem huge for their size, SG bags seem small for their size. Case and point: I have a Kifaru Hoodlum (6300 ci) and a Kifaru Gnargali (5080 ci). I have a SG 5900, 6900 and the new 7000. The Gnargali holds more than the SG 7000! The Hoodlum looks HUGE compared to the SG 7000.

Now, I don’t have an issue with either company, but you need to know that Kifaru bags appear to run huge based on their ci measurements and the SG tend to run on the small size of their ci measurements. Everyone else is probably somewhere in the middle. Really hard to compare one companies 5900 ci pack to another without physically inspecting them yourself IMO.

The 5900, 6400, 6900, are virtually all the same in bivy mode (around 4600 or something like that), the 6900 you have the 2 scope pockets which get the extra 1000 and the 6400 has one scope pocket gets you the extra 500,
Col 4800 doesn’t have the lid attachment like the others so it would need to be attached somehow,
