I look at light options then add Bivy to make durable and quilts and lots of pieces...are there some simple options like a robust shelled bag and simple light pad combo instead of the 3-4 item set ups? I have a down quilt and couple pads for different temps, tyvek to protect the exped but after some time I think I'd like to try a bag.

Does anyone just run a durable shelled bag maybe a little over insulated for season but on a lightweight foam pad negating the need for anything else?

You certainly could, but a lighter shelled bag with a 5oz bivy is more versatile and keeps everything together and keeps bugs and critters out of your gear. There's a million different ways this can be accomplished that's why you see so many different setups
