Like many of you, I’ve been chasing the holy grail of hunting footwear, I’m not sure that it exists. I started with lightly used Crispi Lapponias (loved ‘em), then tried Valdres (same size, but weirdly tighter fit). Over time, I’ve cycled through several pairs, mostly snagged at a discount here or on FB Marketplace: Crispi Nevadas, Crispi Crossovers, Schnee’s Beartooth 2’s, Lathrop & Sons Mountain Hunters and Elites, and most recently, a brand new pair of Schnee’s Beartooth V3 Mids.
I picked up the Beartooth v3’s after selling my Lathrop & Sons boots, which I loved but ran small, causing toe contact on downhill treks. Honestly, the L&S were my favorite, but with a solid pair of Nevadas in my closet, I couldn’t justify splurging on a brand new pair of Lathrop & Sons. Enter the Schnee’s—bought nearly new here at a great price. At first, I was skeptical. Compared to the sneaker-like padding in the Nevadas, the Schnee’s felt stiffer with less cushioning around the foot and ankle. I wore them daily to break them in, but early on, the right boot’s crease pressed into my big toe when squatting—not painful, but annoying.
To speed things up, I conditioned the leather heavily (no clue if that actually helped or if it’s just time doing its thing). Three weeks in, and wow, these boots are molding to my feet like a glove. I threw on my Nevadas and Crossovers the other day to see how they felt after a full day compared to the Schnee’s, and the difference is night and day. The Schnee’s stiff leather is conforming nicely, and despite less padding, they’re starting to feel like an extension of my feet. No discomfort, even on long days.
I’m not saying they’re perfect for everyone—your feet might disagree—but these are quickly climbing my list. Anyone else running Schnee’s Beartooth V3s? How do they stack up for you on tough terrain? Any break-in tips? I am going to start getting some rucks in soon.
