So I shot a dozen scaled quail the other day in SE NM and 2 out of 12 crops had some nasty stuff inside, most had green leaves, seeds and small bugs or normal looking stuff.
The picture is of the nasty stuff in the crop, it was in two birds, it didn't smell bad but on one bird it busted open and went all over the breast and it actually discolored the meat on one side, it was gross!
My first thought was that they were eating something out of cattle poop but there wasn't any bad oder coming from it, I am probably going to give that bird to the dog but would like to know if anyone knew what it could be.

I was out opening weekend first time with my new pup, only got 1 but it had that same stuff in it. First time I've seen it. Usually there all puffed up with grass seeds. Very intrigued as well.

Yep it's nasty looking but the smell isn't...............Lol I didn't taste it
There is no sign of it being from bugs, it does have bunches of little seeds so I also thought it could be some type of seed pod that had that type of goo in it but I don't know of one.

No idea what that is? Nice work on the birds, I am into the Gambel's but hunting solo is rough, lot of flushes and no shots and watching them run through the desert like road runners and then flushing 80 yards out!
