I want to cut a section of the gray hose out to shorten it. I'm wondering how easy it is to reattach the connectors? Does anyone know if shortening the gray hose will impact the funcation of the filter? I just need a way to shorten the hose because it is way too long and I would like to get the filter located closer to the bladder.

Try to gauge how you will packing and splice it in just below your shoulder. Seemed to work well for me but I am using a 3L Platy Big Zip w/ Camelback fittings.

The higher the bag can get, the better the flow.

The longer you can have the hose and higher you can have the "dirty" bag above whatever you are filtering to the faster it will filter. IMO the 12-14" SHTFs filter is out of the bladder is too close IMO. Granted it will still work, but being 24" or further below it will increase flow a lot in my experience.

On the same trip as SHTF I used an inline hooked to an MSR hydration system. Mine has a 31" hose and it flowed quite nicely for filling other containers, but I didn't have a chance to compare it to the squeeze flow rate.

I will have to test but my squeeze fills 3 liters in around 3 minutes. I can time it and put Luke's theory to the test. It makes sense Luke as the longer the water flows the more the pressure builds up to push the water through. But I believe the Sawyer Squeeze is a set flow rate. So it may or may not make a difference. I will test it this weekend and report back on it. Would be awesome if your right.

I'm pretty confident about betting the over on Luke. ;)

Yep a good ol' fashioned stopwatch test would be good to see on this. Just so you know its not the longer hose (ok kinda) or the longer it has to flow that makes the filter work faster, but head pressure or how much water pressure is above the filter. The higher the water column is above the higher the pressure and thus the higher the flow rate granted to a certain extent. So be sure you have it hung in a vertical manner, the bladder, hose, and filter to see the true results just like in your pic only it'll have to be hung higher obviously once you move the filter lower. Hope that helps.

Been using it for nearly 3 years now so I do have a few gallons filtered with it. Figure Becca and I do 6 liters day in the field. Roughly 50 backpacking for 3 years. I'll be over 1000 liters on this setup by end of next month. :D. If found something better I would certainly switch, but still waiting for that something ;) I guess it comes down to me being lazy and HATING to pump for water. :D

Here is the filter setup I use and notice is a bit further down the hose:

Not 100% vertical but still a lot more head pressure on top the filter. below the filter so long as its not higher than the filter it can be lateral with no slowing flowrate there. Hope that helps.

With the 3L big zip, you get a super generous hose length. I cut mine at 27" from the bag, total length is 48" with the filter. Having a stretched upper body I went a bit longer on the bite valve side.

Luke do me a favor and measure that hose length.. (I can see how folks could get the wrong impression about this conversation we are having.) I want to be accurate though with our testing. I followed your lead on this but went with the squeeze so I could hook the filter straight to a bottle if I ever wanted too. I dont think yours has that attachment? Maybe Im wrong. But yeah let me know the length.

I would but its packed away until atleast next Monday or Tuesday while we are moving. Sorry about that. Nope desire to ever hook it up to a bottle. Can't see a situation where that'd be handy, but everyones needs are different so if it makes sense to you then you made the right choice for sure!

Anybody know the best place to pick up a quick disconnect for my sawyer 3 way? I some how lost the male disconnect for the incoming end (grey) not blue. I found some online for around $9 for a 3 pack kit but shipping was $13. Seems a little high. At that point I may as well buy a new 3 filter.

Thank you very much. I guess that will have to do if I can't find anything else. $20 for a 1 inch piece of plastic with an o ring. Hope I can find it tonight but I think it is lost. I wonder if these 1/4 fittings are universal between brands?

Wondering if a guy left his clean bladder in a pack and tried the inline filter with gravity feed will there be enough push to fill a bladder in a pack that has other items in the pack pushing against the bladder already?

I've been experimenting with that and it is less than ideal so far. If you have a full pack it will not work, if you have an empty day pack load it works better. Either way if you open the clean bladder to let air out it seems to increase the flow rate and this is best done out of the pack. I have been trying this with about 1.5 liters of dirty water though, with 3 or 4 liters it should work way better.

I think you guys are making it harder than needed. Just run the big zip dirty and filter the outflow with your sawyer inline. I have been training with it and it works great. I haven't found it to be a big deal to slide my 3L big zip into or out of my DT1 . I've had to remove an item or two to get to the bladder but it takes much less effort than running two bags and all the fiddling you are doing.
