I am hoping to turn my Sawyer Filter into a gravity system...

Is the only way to do this with the parts sold exclusively by Sawyer, or can I rig it up with fittings found at a hardware store?

These are the links to the parts sold by REI to make it work... but I was hoping someone might have found the parts elsewhere to set it up.

I thought there was a write up on here about this, but I couldnt find anything with a search.

Thanks in advance

Phill,

Yes that is what you need. Let me write this up for you.

Youll need a Big zip 3 liter to go with this setup.

Take the Big zip 3 liter hose cut the mouth piece off

Add the Grey adepter to the end.

Now cut your camelbak hose more towards the mouth piece. Add your quick connect Kit to this hose. (Female end should be on the bag side of the hose.)

Now your camelbak should have an easy disconnect kit inline on the blue hose to the camelbak. Easy on easy off.

Now take the blue Adapter. Add a piece of 3 inch hose and then add another Male adapter to that.

So you should have a big zip 3 liter with a hose coming off it that connects to the grey adapter.

camelbak 3 liter with a quick disconnect inline.

Blue adapter with a 3 inch piece of hose and male quick disconnect part.

Now take the grey adapter hook that into the intake of the saywer squeeze filter

Blue adapter screws onto the outtake of the sawyer.

Disconnect your mouthpiece via quick connect from your camelbak hose and hook the blue adapter hose to the camelbak hose that goes to your Camelbak bag.

Here is a photo for reference:

hang your big zip like you see in the photo and it does all the work. Sometimes it can get air locked so you may need to remove the grey adapter to get the flow started. Once it starts takes about 3 mins to fill the 3 liter camelbak.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Exactly what I was looking for!

Thanks for the detailed write up and the photo

You could also use the Blue part of the adapter kit attached to a piece of tubing and screw the filter on the 2 liter sawyer dirty bags. Just put the dirt bag in a 2.5 liter sea to summit stuff sack and cinch it with the filter portion hanging out. Then hang the bag upside down from the half inch webbing on the other side. Either way you do it, the flow rate is excellent with the sawyer used as a gravity filter. I keep the whole system in the 2.5 liter stuff sack which packs pretty flat.
