Recently I one a savage axis in a 7mm-08. Normally I wouldn’t even keep a rifle like this but my daughter drew the ticket for me to win. So since I plan on keeping it I want to turn it into something I might actually use. So far I’ve swapped out the trigger for a jard, installed a bolt lift kit, new stock, bolt handle, pulled of the cheaper two peace scope base and scope that came on it. I’m looking at replacing the barrel. I’ve seen some that have had the action worked on to take a standard recoil lug, and was wondering if anyone has done this and did it gain anything over the factory lug set up?

Done all the same things to mine other than Stock upgrade. Mine shoots great.
I think Desh Ind who does a lot of the bolt lift kits was doing some bolt work. But I think I read on their site yesterday they are not taking on anything else.
Would like to find out myself because I would like to have mine worked over also.

On a positive note, once you're done upgrading, you can put all the pieces back together and you'll have a new savage axis.

The desh kit is what I installed. It seemed to make a pretty good difference. It’s still a little stiff but that should get better once I lap the bolt when I pull the barrel

Seriously. What’s the point in keeping something for sentimental value but then you replace the entire thing and throw the pieces she actually won in the trash.
