So, I have a very nice condition Remington 541S Custom Sporter .22 that was left to me by my grandfather (Very nice, but not mint. A ding or two on the gun, no box or anything for it). Hadn't shot it in about 15 years, but got it out of the safe and took it to the range. Damn, one hell of an accurate little gun... Even with the absolutely horrendous Tasco scope on it from the 70's or early 80's and a trigger that feels about 10 pounds.

I'm thinking of setting it up for small game and plinking. Was going to ditch the Tasco scope and 3/8" dovetail mount and go with a weaver base, rings, leupold rimfire scope, adjust the trigger, and put swivel studs for a sling on it.

Anyone else have one or any recommendations? I know some people consider these collector's items, but don't see myself getting rid of this, and I'm not really into safe queens...

Grubee Wolfpup would look good on it. Leupold 4x is a tiny little scope, too. Plinking at distance wants more scope. I'd look for a glossy adjustable objective and mount it in glossy Conetrol to up the style factor.

I had a similar situation except mine is a less fancy Model 581. Don't bother with a small rim fire scope, just get a decent low cost one like a 3-9 x 40 & you'll be fine for plinking, crows & squirrels. The higher power & bigger objective will help you make better shot placement on those smaller animals.

Was thinking about the VX Freedom Rimfire 3-9x40. Anyone used it?

Or, anyone offhand know a better option with parallax adjustment?

I have the 3-9 Freedom on my CZ and it is a decent scope. You can also find the Nikon 3-9 rimfire with AO on sale right now for around $139-$149. I believe midway had some a few days ago.

Brendan, the 541S is one of the finest shooting rim fire sporters ever made. (Remington Custom shop barrel as I understand). The one I had about 15 yrs ago was super accurate. The only drawbacks I saw in it were the plastic magazine that protruded below the bottom metal...and I wasn’t a Remington RKW stock finish lover. It got sold to a friend to fund a Cooper 57M in .22LR.

As per scopes, I had a Leupold compact 3-9 x 33 with AO on it. Worked very well but they have a short eye relief. ( not good for hard kicking CF but fine on a RF).

The Cooper .22 has a Leupold 4.5 - 14 x 40 with the VH on it. AO goes down to 25 yds and on low power it will handle short range shooting fine. Good luck with Gramps gun!. It will be a shooter!

Thanks for the input everyone... Leaning towards the Leupold Rimfire or a Vortex Crossfire II for now. Both cheaper, and much better than what's on there now. Who knows, maybe at some point I get carried away and find a nicer scope to put on.

I bought a new 541S in the early 1980's when I was shooting a lot of silhouette. I glass bedded and free floated it, and ran a weaver KT6 on it for competition. Very accurate small bore and mine loved Winchester Super x ammo. I now have a different scope on it but haven't shot it in a couple of years.

I've got a Remington 541T. It is very accurate with the right ammo. I have a Leupold VX-2 scope on mine with an AO. Just be aware that most scopes for centerfire rifles, without a parallax adjustment, will be set for 100-150 yards, which is a bit far for a 22 rimfire.
