i have a browning X-Bolt in 7mm and im wondering what shortening the barrel length would do to ballistics and bullet stabilization. its 26" right now but im thinking of having 5' cut and add a muzzle break. just curious if anyone has done this or knows of a program to show the change is fps and stuff. thanks

would it even save that much weight...

20fps per inch cut off is a pretty good estimate. What distances do you plan on shooting at? If it's under 600yds the loss in velocity won't matter much. Are you doing it just to save weight? Or also to make the gun more maneuverable while hiking through brush? A muzzle brake is going to be obnoxiously loud on a short barreled magnum. My 300wm has a 24in barrel and the brake on it ruptured my ear drum on a hunt. Ever since I only hunt suppressed.

Saving weight and making it more maneuverable is the idea. I'm thinking under 400 also as I have posted an attempt to trade my viper 6.5-20 for the viper hs 2-10 (same price point)
I didn't think about the brake noise factor, definitely don't want to do that. Thanks
