Redfield safe (safes in general)

Okay, it was worth a shot on sale at Academy, so I grabbed a Redfield 30 gun safe. I expected a capacity of about half that, which is fine for now and what I need. I also expected that shelving was adjustable and would probably have to be to suit my needs.

What I have is about a 0 gun safe. I may have some old 22’s that could fit, but…seriously?

The “guide” shelf came at the very top position, so a pump shotgun apparently won’t fit. And the very top shelf isn’t adjustable, it’s screwed into the walls in 4 places and into the shelf in 4 more.

What am I missing?

Are you able to cut the shelving out? It won't be pretty, but it might be sufficiently functional to salvage the purchase.

I think I can get the screws out of the top shelf.

I’m just flabbergasted to the point of assuming I must be missing something simple. Unless I disassemble the interior of the safe, it doesn’t appear to actually hold guns.

Of course then I can lean some guns in it which does keep them locked away from the kiddos I suppose. (Not with any semblance of organization or acceptable long term storage.)

Hahaha exactly. The instructions were actually competent English, but only for setting the keypad code.

Noted.

I’ll try all of the screws first. So much for my gun organizational OCD.

Addition - for those considering a safe with my requirement list: lock guns away from kids in the house, fire rating, meh. I wouldn’t buy this if you have any 26” shotguns. We’ll see if I can actually get a dozen in this “30 gun safe” after I knock all of the walls out.

See the hole in the shelf at the back of the safe?

That should line up with a couple of the holder notches.

Yup. It’s about 4-6 inches too short to get a long gun into it. Probably work for a 20” barrel or less? I just ripped it out.

I figured two spots for a rifle with a scope out of the 30 claimed. I should have accounted for 4 each.

Yeah I wouldn’t recommend it unless you have a dozen guns or less and all 22” or less barrels. Short guns fit fine.

It serves a quick and short term need, but I’d keep shopping. That said, I haven’t owned any others and I’m not sure the shelving thing is isolated to this one. Best measure then shop. $2000 wasn’t in the budget for a safe.

I have a little bit nicer safe but have thought for years I should have bought a 72".
Long fishing rods(don't laugh, they cost what a firearm costs and need protection), long-barrel shotguns, lots of reasons why I wish I had bought 72".
