If you killed a Pope and Young buck would you have it entered in the Pope and Young record book??

This is the buck he was scored Non-Typical in the 170s if I remember right.

Probably not myself but I have never had to make that choice. I did pass on entering an IGFA record Blackfin tuna though.

Books aren't really my thing, but that's just me. I could have the world record and I'm not paying anybody to put it in a book.

Yea, that's kinda how I feel, guess that is why I have never submitted him, was taken in 2000.

Numbers in a book are a nice novelty that will be there forever, but so will my photos and stories. Some of my P & Y animals are in the book, some are not. The pope and young club is a good hunting organization, so I don't mind donating to them on occasion.

By the way, congrats on the great buck.

I've killed 3 that qualify, but haven't entered them. It would take a true giant for me to consider having one officially scored, something 180+ for a whitetail.

I have not, but I seem to change my mind from day to day. It's funny 10 years ago I didn't even know what or who they were. Kind of funny with today's rage of "P&Y this, and that".

Also, many people don't like to "Really" find out what their "Big' animal really scores. It's easy to pull a tape on all the antler or horn that is there, but that is a far cry from the true actual score. Take the buck above, it would gross score very well, but as a NT it would take a severe hit on it's side to side deductions. I would be surprised if it even made P&Y. In saying that, you shoot that buck every year if he walks by on day 1, first 5 minutes.

I do understand what you are saying, but he was officially scored for the Texas State Awards program and they used the P&Y score sheet. I just can't remember that exact score but it was in the 170s.

I whole heartedly agree with this statement. Books and scoring systems are simply a way for us to be on the same page about the size of an animal. I have never shot a book buck, and it is rare to have the opportunity. I shot a buck this fall that i knew was big. I told my partner "He won't score well, but he is big. Im taking him!" Big is big, that buck you took is a stud by any Hunters standards! If you choose to enter him, good. If not, who cares, heck of a buck that you will tell the story on for many years.

That's a great buck with lots of character.

I have one typical whitetail in the B&C book. Gross is 184" & change mainframe 12, net is 174. And nets are for fish. My 3 boys entered it (via my wife) for me as a father's day gift. My boys are 8, 6, & 4 now. If not for them I would never have entered it. I'm glad they did it not because I want to brag; but proud for the reasons they did it. They are proud of dad and that's a great feeling. I will forever remember that season because my brother and I hadn't hunted together since high school. He shot a 167" the day before. We both saw bucks that were bigger (non-typicals), but just watched them as they were on a neighbors pasture. One of those was hit by a semi a week later hauling hay, and the other was found dead while checking cattle.

I've killed a few qualifying animals and have never entered one.

If a guy says he wouldn't enter a world record though he is either naive or lying. Animals like that don't get swept under the rug anymore

I have in the past and I will continue to support the club with the $35 it costs to have an animal entered.

Nice buck Stid!!

Yes.... I enter every animal that qualifies. P&Y & B&C are much more than just record keeping organizations. I'm a lifetime supporter. Ed F

+1. I completely agree and will do so my entire life. For those that think it is merely a place to have your name in print, I believe they are missing so much of the reasoning behind the record-keeping organizations. Imagine how strong these conservation organizations would be if every hunter entered each animal that qualified...sportsman would be much, much more strong.

Thanks for the advice guys,, might just take and have him score for the book. Here is a photo of the article he was featured in when he was scored for the Texas awards program.

I think the benefit of doing it is supporting the club. Other than that I could care less if my name is in a book. I have taken a few animals that qualify but have not put them in a book.

If I had something in the top 20 or so I might. My mountain goat makes all time with just over an inch to spare....but I'm not paying to be #283 (not sure where'd it'd actually end up on the list but FAR from the top) on a list. :D

But I'm not a trophy hunter really.....more of a shoot the first legal thing that comes along most of the time.

I used to enter them but after seeing the target it paints on hunters from an envious few, I quit.

Any hunter that gets more than a few record book entries starts to attract a lot of enemies. So sad, but often true. I've even seen Game & Fish Departments turn up the heat on record book holders with nothing more than a few rumors to go on. It's almost impossible not to break some law some time while hunting. With the increased scrutiny from a few book entries, who needs that!

I do fully support the record book organizations and think they offer a great service to all of us.

It's an interesting topic, because I thought the original intent of the scoring and record keeping systems was to acknowledge the top specimens of the species, not the hunter who took them. The commercialization of big game hunting has seemed to reverse this over time. The founding fathers of conservation thought that some of these species where going to go extinct, so they devised the B&C system to document the species so future generations could know what was here, not to recognize trophy hunters. Conservation took hold in a big way and the species survived, some even have come back from near extinction.
Personally, I plan on entering anything that qualifies, I like the original idea of it all and it's a great database for age class and genetics.
