Bought a 28N 5 years ago. Drives nails, super easy to shoot. It’s heavy (14lbs as pictured), especially barrel heavy. sucks to carry or sling. Has roughly 300 rounds down the pipe.
Bought a 30/28N 2 years ago, it’s awesome. Well balanced (11.5lbs), great to carry hunting.
So should I put a Carbon barrel on the 28 To try and balance it out? Chop current barrel? Convert it to 30/28 as well? What’s your thoughts?
My cousin and uncle run 28’s as well so we have a mountain of brass, powder, and 195’s. I also have A LOT of the powder and 215’s for the 30, enough to convert this gun and still burn out the barrels on both.

I’m back and forth on what do do with it, thought it would be a good discussion.
Matt

The easiest, cheapest route is to send it to LRI for a serious barrel fluting. It'll take pounds off the barrel and you still have a proven accurate rifle that doesn't need load development, wait time for a new barrel ect.

I figure the barrel has another 300 rounds left in it before it’s toasted. With the off season and nothing but time, what would you recommend for other routes?

I would put a new carbon barrel on it. Makes a big difference with those long barrels.

I would also keep it a 28 nos just to have something different, can compare etc.

Making some changes to it. Going to try the xlr chassis and barrel will go to LRI to get some weight taken off. Should be a sweet rig when its done.

Did I read this correctly? 600 rounds before your bbl is done?

Yes, give or take. I’m running the ragged edge on my load for it. 28N run hard doesn’t last long, throat erosion. now that’s it’s all set up though, the barrel should last me many years to come for hunting. Looked back in my data book, I’m actually at 230 rounds.
