if you are a legal resident of a state an get resident tags, then move to another state, are you still allowed to use the resident tags?

I know in CO you have to be here for 6 months to be considered a resident to apply for or buy tags. So if I had been a WY resident until September with resident drawn tags, I'd still be hunting WY as a resident through this year.

I moved to MT 11 years ago in May for a year. I knew I was moving there, so I applied for and drew the NR combo deer and elk tags. I knew I wasn't going to be eligible for their resident status come September so I applied and hunted as a NR. But I also hunted CO that September as a resident still, even though I moved to MT in May. You have to be a resident of somewhere in regards to hunting, and if you're not a resident yet in the new state then you're still a resident of the old state.......in regards to hunting.

You can only be a resident of one state at a time. If you aren't a resident of the new state, I would assume that means you're still a resident of the old place. But I'd definitely check the regs to be sure.

It would come down to what your Id said. If you were checked in the field.

This isn't true. You can get an ID after moving within a few weeks but to buy a resident license in certain states you need to live there for 6 months etc.

Your ID does not dictate your residency. Time lived in your state does. I've been checked in Wyoming with a NY driver's lisence ( NY is a terrible place and incapable of getting me a copy of my birth certificate) game wardens have checked me, I've been pulled over and I've purchased over 10 guns with that NY ID as a Wyoming resident. I'm hoping to have the whole mess straightened out over this winter. But your ID doesn't not dictate status if residency.

It depends on the state, but for the ones I’m familiar, you lose your “resident hunting status” if you make any type of claim of residency in another state.

Wyomings rules:

So technically if you left Wyoming and bought a primary home and got a drivers license in another state, then you would no longer be a Wyoming resident for Hunting purposes. You’d most likely also not be considered a resident for hunting purposes in the new state either.

While legally for tax purposes it makes since you must be a resident of some state. For hunting purposes I don’t believe that to be the case. In many instances the new state wouldn’t allow “resident hunter status” for 6 or more months after transferring your legal residency.

agree with the above on obtaining a permit. you have to be in wy a year I believe, mo for 30 days, something like that. but that is about buying one to begin with. I am curious if you are a resident of a state and get a tag thru a drawing in say july, then in september of that month you leave the state but you still have the resident tag you bought in good faith earlier in the year. if they wont allow you to use it would they refund it (not that it matters for 50 bucks). calling the state would be the best answer, this just popped in my mind yesterday as I was waiting to go hunt.
