Hello, I’m doing some E scouting for an elk/mule deer hunt in a mountainous region of Idaho next October.

I am have been hunting whitetail in the east my entire life but I know very little about Elk and their habitat.

I have attached some screenshots of different areas within the vicinity we are planning on hunting. I would appreciate anybody willing to give their thoughts on whether or not it looks like these areas could hold Mule deer or Elk. Obviously nobody really knows by just looking at satellite pictures but I am trying to get an idea of what to look for while E scouting. Thanks!

The best advice I can give is to watch Randy Newberg’s YouTube videos on escouting and where to find elk depending on what time of year it is. Another option is finding podcasts with Mark Livesay talking about escouting tips and tactics. He’s been on quite a few podcasts as a guest where he talks about reading maps to find elk finding features that he refers to as “odds multipliers.” The more odds multipliers, or elk finding features you can stack together in a given area, the more worthy that area is of creating a hunt plan and checking it out. Good luck!
