Hello,

was wondering if any of you are using those during your hunts in our kind of mountains?

i never used those and used only a bellay jacket with synthetic down for decades but im curious about your use and of course your feedback.

thank you

Given the low weight and packability having my puffys was a real benefit. I've used them more than a few times to "supplement" my sleeping situation w/ my 10 degree bag.

I used them inside my bag when it got real cold one night, also used my puffy jacket while taking care of my sheep. I think it’s worth the little bit of weight penalty.

Down jacket and pants are money. They take up very little space and won’t weigh you down.

Throw them on after a climb to “bake” dry your sweat soaked clothes. Throw them on when glassing if it’s cold. Throw rain gear over them if glassing in the cold and it’s windy. Throw them on to extend the temp rating on your bag.

AB mountains here. Down puffy hoodie and pants are must haves IMO. The warmth per weight is excellent, and in the end, lets a guy leave more weight in layers at home than what they add.

I think you'll be very happy with the upgrade and wish you had done it sooner.

I used my puffy jacket on a Brooks Range Dall hunt almost every evening. Spent the night on the mountain one night and was glad I had both puffy jacket and pants. It was cold and would have been miserable without. Also use them frequently on elk and deer hunts. Definitely worth the weight to have in the pack

I’ve spent some cold wet nights out in my kifaru LPP. It’s a go to piece of equipment for me. I have the pants but never used them.

I took both on mine and lived in them both for the entire hunt.

Puffy Pants were the old Under Armor Apline Storm (something like that?) and an Outdoor Vitals prototype puffy. Both worked excellent to stay warm.

Anytime you pack for a 7 day plus hunt I like systems that have built in versatility. I have an ultra lite 30 degree sleeping bag from REI that when in the bag is only about 12" in length and maybe 8" diameter and weighs 1 lb. Coupled with good insulated wear it works on nights when it gets colder.

I have a stone glacier grumman light down insulated jacket and the grumman down insulated pants. I also have a KUIU insulated vest that I take to because it doesn't weigh but a few ounces yet if I want warmth without wanting to wear a down jacket, I can toss on the vest. I used to think having an inuslated vest and a jacket was just stupid, but once I realized I could save ounces by going extra packable and light on the sleeping bag, and tent, I found that this system worked really well. I judge my gear based on how often I'm wearing it in a given day and with the exception of the insulated pants, I wore most of my stuff everyday. The pants are necessary though if you're going to gamble on the climate with a light sleeping bag.

KUIU original Super Down hooded Ultralight jacket and zip-off down pants got worn a whole bunch on sheep, caribou and moose hunts in Northern BC and the Mackenzie Mountains, NWT. Used them for glassing, around back-pack camp as well as to augment the KUIU 15*F Super Down Sleeping bag on real cold nights....around 0*F on one October caribou/moose hunt camped near timber line as the most extreme.

Also wore them for 11 straight days on a February Nunavut Polar Bear hunt....never taking them off the whole time including at night in a tent "heated" by a Kerosun heater with lows near -40*F. Had a caribou parka and pants that never came into the tent and went over them along with several other under-layers too.

thank you very much for the feedback, before reading your posts i was not thinking i felt naked where i was hunting lol ...

i might have to try some one day but remember i have used for years the equivalent of down but in synthethic primaloft (different brands) jacket.

always thought down apparels were more for winter.

again i have to rethink the whole.

Puffy pants and jacket are staples in my pack regardless where I am at and the time of year. Puffy jacket gets used almost every trip. Puffy pants....on rare occassions, but nice to have if unexpectedly must stay a night on the mountain. I carry a Kuiu original superdown jacket (circa 2013ish) for warmer hunts, a Kuiu pro for colder hunts, and western mountaineering flash pants always.

My puffy pants and jacket go with me on every hunt and fishing trip Alaska! I’ll wear my puffy jacket all winter. The puffy is my go to
