So I will be in Iceland next April and there is a ten day season on puffins. Anyone have any experience in this arena? I’m curious if anyone could point me in the right direction for importing a couple birds into the US, if I manage to bag a few birds. Never hunted outside the states so have zero experience on importing wild game, especially waterfowl. Any input or experiences would be greatly appreciated. Also looking into a possible artic fox hunt but not sure I will have the time to make it happen.

I wish I could remember what was involved but some guys I was with imported some ducks in from New Zealand when we were there.

That sounds like a cool trip!

a us fish and wildlife import export permit would be a good place to start. Dont screw around with CITES. If this is a one time thing its usually easier to use a broker.

I would just eat them while you are there, but they taste pretty fishy.

One time we were coming back through Minneapolis, and the custom's agents had a couple dogs in the baggage claim that hit on a bag. They pulled it aside and then an older couple (like in their 80's) claims the bag, and they have them open it. They had a frozen leg of lamb in it....LOL.

The outfitter you go with should have all the information on how to get them back to the states, I haven’t hunted any thing in Iceland but traveled through there to get to Greenland to hunt musk ox and caribou. We used a broker to get them back to the states, expensive but made it fairly easy.

Check with your taxidermist. If they have been in business very long they have dealt with game coming into the US.
I’m jealous of your puffin hunt. I would love to hunt them.

Anyone been to Iceland before? Would like to find some first hand experience even if it isn’t hunting related?

Nope, but I would want to fish for for in a row boat if I were there. Such an amazing history of that fish and country.

Was just there. Not much to hunt. Their fish stew is very good. Fireworks on NYE are out of this world, have to see to believe. They sell commercial fireworks to citizens...

I didn’t even know puffins we’re hunted. Just watched a “ blue planet” episode on them. Cool looking little bird, but not sure I my self would hunt them. Keep us posted how you do. Pictures of mounts would be cool to.

I believe there is only a ten day season on them. I am almost more intrigued in netting them rather than shooting. Watched some videos on YouTube.

Awesome, 5MilesBack! Any more pictures?

I've got hundreds, if not 1000's of pics. That fishing pic was taken by my buddy, so I don't have anymore of myself I don't think. I didn't even know he was taking pics of me bringing the fish in and then he yelled over, so I held it up. I have a pic of him on a different day holding a fish from his waist to his feet. That one was 22lbs but most of them were 10-15lbs. One day he and I caught 45 fish in two hours, all of them over 10lbs. The best part was.......he and I were the only ones out there for the three years we were there.......and we fished a LOT. With 20+ hours of daylight, and 3 hours of "dusk", there's a whole lot of time to fish. I never kept many of them, when I did we ate them fresh.
