Proof Barrel Problems

I have recently ordered and put together a 6.5 prc build off a impact percision nbk action using a proof 22in barrel. I assembled the rifle using manufacturers recommendations and torque specs and have recently taken it out to the range to see how it shoots.

I was less then pleased when I couldn't group anything under 2ins. I thought it might have been the scope rings shifting, but after switching to some 419 rings and rezeroing, I had the same issue. So I thought it was me, maybe im pulling my shots, so I had a friend try it out and he had the same issue.

I have stripped the gun apart, cleaned it, reassembled everything and still can't get it to shoot. So long story short has anyone had issues with pre-fit barrels coming from Proof?

What kind of stock and what are your action screws torqued to? Also what is twist rate of barrel and what projectile are you sending down range?

Im using a MDT CRBN torqued at 60in-lbs and a Proof 22in CF barrel w/ 7.5 twist torqued at 70in-lbs per their recommendation. I also have an Unkown Munitions 3 port TI muzzle brake attached.

I have tried 147gr eld-m, 143gr eld-x, and Berger 156gr J4. I have not done a load development yet because i expected to have better results with factory ammo.

Most Proof prefits shoot pretty darn good, but that’s not to say you couldn’t have gotten a bad one. Every barrel manufacture puts out a few turds. 2”+ with 3 different types of factory ammo is pretty bad, I think I would try a different scope if you have another handy, try it without the muzzle brake and if you have access to a different stock or chassis try it in that. If all those things fail send it back to Proof.

OP, it's far more likely that something other than that barrel is the problem.

One thing I didn't see mentioned is your scope - what is it, and how does it stay zeroed on a different rifle?

Also, you might try shooting without the break or thread-protector on, just as part of trouble-shooting.

I have a couple proof carbons that shoot amazing. I do have a proof carbon in 7-08 that will not shoot, but it is more like 1 to 1.5 moa. So I wouldn’t rule out getting a bad barrel.

Years ago I bought a 6.5 PRC. This was my first magnum rifle. It took a lot of shooting for me to realize I shot it much better with a loaded bipod and a solid rear bag.

It looks like you have some pretty premium components. Have you tried different shooting setups?

Torque that barrel to 80-100 LB-FT. If you actually have it torqued to 70 lb-in that is probably your problem
thank you for the comment! I check my torque wrench to see if I had goofed up and luckily I didnt reset it from when I assembled the gun last. It read 75 lb-ft.

Not directly applicable but I picked up a 16” 22 ARC Proof barrel for my AR earlier this year. It was recalled before I even had a chance to install it, with Proof citing widespread accuracy and gas port deterioration issues on their 22 ARC line of offerings. Sent it back and got refunded.

I currently have a MK4 leupold on it but I have had issues with leupolds in the past. I have a trijicon tenmile I can swap it with and give that a whirl.

Is it possible the break could be causing POI changes to that extent? I didn't think of that but I will give that a try as well. Thank you for the suggestions.

i just added a TI brake to a previously unthreaded muzzle (proof carbon prefit) and it changed the POI by like SIX inches. removed it and switched to their stainless version i had sitting around and it moved the initial POI by maybe 3 inches.

i have a couple of proof barrels and when i couldn't get the 300wsm one to shoot, they had me send it back and they replaced it no problem.
