I haven't really been "playing the draw game" long.... but I have a young family and we count every penny. How do you guys get away with buying all these upfront tags and waiting until you draw one or two before getting the money back. I'd like a little insight so that maybe I can figure this out without trying to save up 10k to keep in an account for just a bunch of pref points lol.

Credit card with alot of room! Use your tax return for Colorado.

Really the only 3 states you have to front are WY, CO, and NM.. You could buy points only in WY so you don't have to front the tag or pay the draw fee, the only thing that really matters in CO besides Sheep/Goat/Moose is Mule Deer, and the only thing that really matters in NM is Elk.. Not counting CO Sheep/Goat/Moose you only need a little over $1k in room on a CC if you go that route..

I end up being out total a little over $1k for putting in for 14 states.. If I were to take out one of the expensive ones, like Nevada, it would only be about $800.. Doesn't seem too bad to me

I would just figure out your budget, CC room, and priorities and go from there

I used to put in for most of the states; then I started really looking at the odds vs. the price. Came to the realization that it was ridiculous to be buying $150 licenses for odds less than 1% in some cases. In one state (NV) I'm so far in the game, I just can't quit - although the odds are still dismal. I ended up dropping out of AZ & UT.

If your priority is big mule deer, you have to do Colorado and Wyoming, and then maybe Nevada, good tags in WY & CO with just a few points.

For big elk, Arizona, New Mexico, Wyoming, and then maybe Utah & NV, though odds are you'd have a long wait.

Sheep, Moose, & goat odds are almost lottery like in most cases. You might be better off to save your application fees and just buy a hunt in 10-15 years.

Deal with living in a God forsaken land for 12 months a year, then your elk, deer, and antelope apps will run around 100.00 total..maybe 120.00. That's pretty easy to handle.

Good info, I just kind of assumed that states were like Colorado that you had to pay the fees and tags up front. Which states are not like this?

The nice thing about Utah is you can get two years worth of apps on one license. the license I good for 365 days so you can get two application periods off of one license so it saves a little. Other than that I put my apps and kids apps on a credit card. Colorado is cheap for me since I'm a resident. New mexico is fast and usually credits my card back before the bill is due if I don't draw so it doesn't cost me anything unless I draw.
