I am trying to decide on a new gun case to fly with. The options I am looking at are the Pelican 1750, Pelican Storm IM3300, and the SKB ATA Double Rifle Case.

The 1750 is the heaviest and the SKB is the lightest (25lbs vs 22 lbs). The SKB is the narrowest on the inside. The Storm is the biggest case for space. I think its pretty secure with the Storm and Pelican having foam cutouts to customize to each rifle, but the downside is you need different foam if you change your rifle.

All of them I can find for ~$200.

Any opinions of these 3 cases? Probably can't go wrong, but I wanted to check and see what you guys thought.

I have only used pelican cases so that's all I can comment on. I've used them mostly for work to carry rifles back and forth and they have been used and abused with nothing done to the rifle. I have one at home for my .22LR collection and it works very well also. I went with Pelican because it was free.

I don't specifically about the models you list but we have a Pelican and an SKB case that we use for flying. If you are going with two rifles then go with the lightest case you can get. On this years trip to Alaska I had the heavier Pelican case with just two rifles, two boxes of ammo and a range finder and I was pushing the 50lb limit. Granted, these weren't ultralight rifles but you get the point.

I have the 1750 also and really it.

I've got the SKB. I've used it to fly two rifles all around Alaska with no problems. I have to admit I probably would have purchased the Pelican case were it available when I bought mine. I've used many Pelican cases and have full confidence in them. But even so, the SKB has been great for me. You really can't go wrong.

Forgot to mention, one of the TSA locks on our SKB fell out and we also managed to lose the keys to the other latch. SKB sent out a whole new latch with lock and key absolutely free.

I have a Pelican 1750 as well. Every year it flies commercial within Alaska at least once (this year twice) and lately been flying down to lower 48 with it as well. Had a linker 375 H&H, a 325 WSM, and a .308 Win, a set of trekking poles, and 60 rounds of ammo in it on one trip to western AK this year and it was still under the 50 pound max. It also has been ratcheted down to wheeler and polaris 6x6 racks and bounced around that way too. Been holding up strong for 7 years now with no issues. Nice to be able to haul 4 rifles if needed at times.

I have both the Pelican and SKB and they're both excellent cases. If I had to choose one for all around, bomb-proof protection though, I'd pick the Pelican. I like being able to stick a couple rifles, ammo, and other small stuff into the Pelican, it just has more room inside with the Pick-N-Pluck foam to customize it for hauling a lot of stuff.

thanks for all the feedback guys. this is great stuff. I have the SKB bow case and its been great for my bow, but I think im going to try the pelican for the rifle. I like the idea of customizing the foam and basically locking stuff in place to try and avoid scope issues.

luke - those must have been some pretty light rifles to be under 50 haha. I am sure you have that dialed in pretty close.

yeah with those 3 rifles one is around 9 pounds I'd guess the other two combined for less than 13 pounds together all up.

I have the cabelas branded case which is similar to the pelican. Pelican probably wins, but I got the cabelas for 150.

I've got three 1750's and love them. Extremely tough and never had an issue with a scope getting knocked off through airlines and on forest service roads and the like. I've looked at the skb but can't bring myself to give up on what I know works well. Will buy another pelican soon for my new build.

The company I work for has several hundred field service reps and on an individual basis we order sensitive electronic test equipment from our central equipment bank. With the exception of a few high-end, custom-built cases we use Pelican cases exclusively, cases that have stood up to years of abuse from airlines, FedEx and couriers. Yes, this is anecdotal evidence and my experience alone can't say Pelican is better than SKB, we simply don't use them. What I will state is that for the last 16 years I've yet to open a Pelican case and find its contents damaged.

Pelican is all I've used, both personal and professional, for the last seven years.
I've never had a reason to change from Pelican.

Please tell me how you are fitting 3 rifles in a 1750? I have a 1750 and can just barely fit 2 scoped rifles, honestly it's to close for my comfort so I only use it for 1...I want atleast 2 inches of foam from all edges of my scopes.

I would say if you need 2" of foam around all your rifles scopes then yeah, just one rifle on the top and one on the bottom with the foam divider in the middle. Between them. I don't do foam cut outs for my rifles. Maybe I'm lucky but in a dozen or more years of using it I haven't had issues.
