Planning to head out to Bethel AK for a DIY fly in moose hunt in Sept 2026 with my dad through Papa Bear Adventures.

I’m curious how those who have gone over the past few years have done? Any advice for a first timer headed into that country whether it’s gear or hunt related? Got the gear list from the outfit but sometimes there are gaps that experience can help to fill in.

We’re both hoping to hold out for larger bulls, so any pics of previous harvest or what average bull size was while hunting would be appreciated.

Thanks

They have a good number of pictures on their website for 2024 and earlier. You should be able tonget a decent idea of what to expect from that.

The good thing about the area is there is no minimum size, so a borderline bull in some other units will be 500 lbs of awesome wild game meat there.

Two bigger bulls from one camp is possible, but far from a guarantee.

since you just joined today, i would suggest you use the search function. lots of past info on this forum about exactly what you are asking for.
I’ve read the older threads already over the past few months and gotten lots of good info from them.

Made an account looking specifically for more updated info though from the past couple years, as there haven’t been as many pictures or forums saying if things have changed.

I hunted with Justin in 2019 and 2022. Couldn't have been better. I'd go back in a minute if moose was on the agenda. I killed a 58" and a 63" on my trips.
I really loved my stocking foot waders with wading boots. I don't own high dollar gear, just good solid stuff. Gotta make weight so don't over pack.
Raking and calling from camp on my lake or slough hunts was the smart way to hunt. Certain camps you can kill from near camp. Stay quiet and don't run all over if not needed.
Don't shoot one in the water. Repeat, don't shoot one in the water. And finally, don't shoot one in the water......

Some great advice. Especially hammering that last point home haha. I appreciate it.

You can survive and kill moose with not much gear. You can forget a lot of things and still get a moose. You can have cheap rain gear and still have a great hunt.
If you are not not in good enough shape to pack 5 loads of 120-150lbs back to camp you cannot have a moose.

Pack wise but remember it’s not everything. Don’t overlook physical preparation and moose knowledge…
