It's been a few years since I/we chased Elk - have a new guy coming with us for a September bowhunt in the high country.

Wondering if anyone has or knows of an online resource that has solid gear lists for a DIY, backpack, mobile archery elk hunt (gone from the vehicle for up to 7-8 days & not base-camping). Would like to be sure the new guy has everything he needs.

If not, I'm sure I can cobble one together.

Anyone have a lead?

I think I've seen lists like that multiple times here on RS. You could probably find it if you search....

Personally, I think the best strategy is a dry run to see what works for you. What I need....and what you need will be different. For example, I wouldn't leave the TH without Benendryl [I'm allergic to meat bees] and Antacid [Backpack food can bite me]

You will more than likely not need those things.

Great googly mooglies, I finally have seen someone seriously more geeked-out on gear than I am. Wow.

I appreciate the help from everyone, and as I pulled my lighterpack together (I have several lists for long Canada canoe trips) I definitely had missed a few things that I spotted on other lists.

My base weight appears to be 27lbs, plus food/water weight.

And I now have a dumbed-down list for the new guy.

Again, thanks for the assist.

this is pretty much on point for lightweight packing, id leave the tripod and spotter behind depending on terrain too. the only things i dont see included here would be rain gear, and perhaps some of the items in the possibles pouch, emergency signaling, first aid, fire-starter, backup headlamp, bug net, sunscreen, these items are all very user specific as people have varying degrees of comfort items and redundancies they wish to lug around.

Thanks! Good info. How many of you are bringing a tripod and spotter/binos for backcountry hunts? Say 3-6 miles in. Much of the unit in CO we are going is dark timber and there are few glassing points but not sureif it's worth it. Glassing points would be at views close range of 3/4 mile to

Clicked send too soon. 3/4 to 2 miles. Have a pair of Maven 15x and chest binos 10x. Bring the tripod and mavens would be about 3 lb. Tripod is 2lb. This would be archery elk.

If it was me on an archery hunt, I would just bring the 10x binoculars. For me on a rifle hunt with limited long range glassing, I would probably still bring the 10x binoculars but also have a sub 2lb tripod to sit and glass off or shoot off, something like the Aziak Ridgeline.

I love a tripod, I have a generic cheapo off amazon or ebay that is sufficient for my 10s, the tripod can't be much more than a pound and a half.

Here is a PDF of my ultra-nerd'd out 8-day backcountry gear list/breakout for my 2024 elk hunt in BC out of my Exo K4 5000. This was late September into mid-October so obviously some of the clothing items would be omitted. Also wouldn't bring a spotter/tripod setup, etc.

Tried to upload the Excel file, but the site won't allow it. If you want it in the original Excel with all the hyperlinks, pm me an email and can send the excel file to you.
