I have been accumulating parts for a new hunting rifle build off a m700 long action. I’m ready to ship everything off to have built but I’m hung up on what to chamber.

I have wanted a 6.5-284 since before the creedmoor was a twinkle in the .30 TC’s eyes.... I do reload and have plenty of primers and powder. Looks like there is availability of brass currently, but no bullets to be found (hornady/berger of my flavor). Even if some become available, I really do worry about long term with the current climate of politics and future availability of components.

The 6.5-284 isn’t usually readily available off the shelf any way, should components become non-existent.

So I’m weighing my options. Should I continue with my plan of desired cartridge, or do something a little more practical with a common chamber in the event of scarcity of components in the future and hope there will be some ammo on the shelves.

Any and all opinions will be appreciated.

I don’t see any reason for concern unless you’re looking for factory ammo. It doesn’t take many pieces of lapua brass to last the life of your barrel, buy it now and you’re set. 6.5 bullets shouldn’t be much harder to find than others.

Build it. Use lapua or peterson brass. My x284 pushes 156eols very accurately at 2980 fps. Chamber specs are very important on the x284 as there have been so many versions. You want a reamer with a 299nk and at least 188 freebore, this will fit lapua/peterson brass the best and not require nk turning. Berger will have more bullets available soon I am sure. Hunt around for them online and you'll find some.
