OnX app. What am I missing?

It’s obviously an awesome app, when it actually works. But it seems like 98% of the time I actually need it or try to use it, there’s not enough service for it to pull up.
Are you guys just a lot luckier to have phone service where you hunt, or just paying a lot of money for an app that only works in good cell service ( no where I hunt, even in NE).
Is there a way to tie your phone in with an inreach or something to get it to work?

Thanks guys. I just have the onX hunt app. Not sure about the offline maps or how to download anything, but that gives me hope that I’m not wasting my money and a direction to start research . Thanks again.

Use the app to download the maps on your phone, it may take a minute playing around on the app to figure it out but that should solve your problem.

Awesome, thank you. Got one downloading now. How far zoomed in or out should you be to get a good map downloaded?

None of them work unless you have great cell service. That’s why they have the off-line map option. Just figure out what areas you’re going to be in, download map while you’re in Wi-Fi, then make sure your phones in airplane mode when you’re in the field so it’s not trying to connect to crappy cell phone service. It’ll work great, I promise

And just an FYI, me and my 2 buddies ran into this problem this week while elk hunting. The offline maps work IF you don’t have too many downloaded. We had a ton of maps downloaded for our unit and couldn’t get any of them to actually pull up. Went through and deleted the ones we weren’t going to be using and boom, worked fine. Still kinda sucks tho. You would think that if you downloaded a map, it should be saved

I going through this now. Downloaded a bunch of maps last week and when I went into OnX today they apparently were not saved and asked if I wanted to continue downloading???? So do I need to delete some old ones before it'll save these new ones?

Maybe that's what my problem was in Wyoming on my Pronghorn hunt. I did the same thing since I had never been to the unit. I was having problems even in airplane mode seeing my waypoints and the property boundaries. I will try to keep the downloaded maps to a minimum next time and see if that helps.

Ok I'm an idiot. I downloaded maps on my tablet and my phone. Slightly different maps for the same area. I wasnt sure if they were downloaded on one device if they transfer to the next. So now the maps I downloaded on one device are being downloaded to the other and vice versa. Good grief

They are saved to the memory of the individual device . I have to clear out memory on my phone some times but I have not had any problems

I got the app on my phone two weeks ago and immediately downloaded five of the five mile maps to cover the area I was going to be hunting last week. It worked great offline. After the first day, I left my GPS at camp.

Yeah, same here. We had everything downloaded, went out of service and nothing would work. Praise the man upstairs that I had the inreach app because if not, we wouldn’t have had anything else to really navigate by. OnX really lost me. It’s way too expensive to not be able to download all the maps you need and work properly. Like this was just what we had downloaded for one state. What would happen if we used it for multiple states? I’d be really screwed

I do use it for multiple states. I have many maps downloaded, and I am having no problems.

I've also noticed the off line maps are not as high quality (low res.) as when online.
They are different maps. Online or on the computer, OnX uses Google imagery. The offline maps are from a different source and not quite as good. I realized differences in imagery awhile back and called OnX and that's what I was told. Too bad we can't get the better imagery in offline mode and it's too bad that the imagery isn't exactly the same offline/online. But it's a pretty good app. I sure like the new feature of being able to share tracks--been after them a couple of years to do that.
