Agreed, pay attention to the wind the entire time. As mentioned it is a slog so pick a pace you would be happy to do on the last day. Also bring extra snacks, can never seem to have enough of those.

Don't be afraid to be aggressive!

Rifle or bow? Location/IE state? I still have yet to put one down so might not be the best person to give advice. :) Keep moving and look for sign and always have back up plans to backup plans.

It's an adventure, push yourself but enjoy your hunt. You've been planning for a long time, after it's over you don't want to think you could've work harder.

Have a back up plan ready on area. If there are no elk in the area you go into leave and go somewhere else. If there aren't there all you are doing is hiking.

Enjoy the experience and try to learn. If you dont kill something it doesnt make the trip unsuccessful. Good luck!

Also... Wind!

-Be as methodical as you can. Use very resource available.

-Be prepared to hike until you find animals. This may come hard Or really hard!

-Be patient. I was able to range and adjust a single pin sight prior to shooting. I had lots of time, just move slow and wait for the right opportunity.

-Hunt with the right people

I'm not a very good elk hunter but I get one now and again. And the main thing I do is hunt hard and glass a lot. Last bull I killed in Colorado I was 7 miles from the truck day hunting.

Good luck and have fun.

Step one is be in the woods. Stay in the game all day. Even if it is just sitting around on a little stand somewhere. Elk have a funny way of appearing when you least expect it. When it happens, it happens fast. Think about scenarios throughout the day wherever you happen to be.

As mentioned previously, take time to enjoy the hunt itself, hunt hard- if you know elk are in a nasty area make a game plan and dive in, go after the elk = opportunities increase your odds of filling a tag.

Don't cheat, ALWAYS obey the wind! If that means you have to drop 500' in elevation and spend and extra hour moving around the herd you do it.
