Kid I know first year hunter killed a calf moose in Utah and managed to get into the back of his truck drove it to a buddies house to show it to him and the guy was like dude that’s a baby moose not a cow elk. He turned himself in, and had to meet fish and game at the kill site, they left the carcass at the kill site and gave him some insanely lenient citation of like 200 or something.

Heard of a few fellas a number of years ago that shot a charolais calf thinking it was an antelope....

Seriously??? I can honestly say I have never shot the wrong type of animal. Closest I came was my very first whitetail as a teenager. Doe season. No antlers whatsoever.... shoot "it", and as we get close my friend yells "it has a d!($". I am immediately sick, but I know it didnt have antlers! Turns out it was a buck, but had completely shed his antlers, so perfectly legal.

I did the same. Also shot a "doe" antelope who happened to have longer horns than most doe, she also had a d*** as well . Fortunately, I had a doe and buck tag that year.

This same thing came up last year as a guy from
Farmington shot a moose up near Silverton. It was close to dark and all he saw was a dark chest and antlers. Turned himself in. CPW said then that they get nearly a dozen "accidental" moose kills every year.

I was told by a Montana warden that they had a guy come through a roadside check station proudly showing the cow moose he’d shot. Guy was from Jersey and had a tag. Problem was it was a mule !

That's a rough eating moose. Hope the check station let it ride, and let him enjoy all of that delicious meat!
