NXS, ATACR, or ???

I’ve been looking to mount a 2.5-10x42 NXS to a 20” Tikka compact 6.5CM but now I’m wondering if I should pony up the extra money for the something like the 4-16x42 ATACR or maybe Mark 5 3.6-18x44.

It’s primarily a beanfield rifle but I also shoot steel out to ~800 yards. I like the short length and smallish (42-44mm) objective of these scopes. Not too concerned with the FFP/SFP difference, I’d be fine with either.

Would the ATACR or Mark 5 be overkill?

Welcome.

not sure how price and weight sensitive you are but ATACR adds about a $1k over the nxs line.

maybe consider the Nx8? 2.5-20 glass in that 30oz zip code for $1800, instead of $2800 for the ATACR. Plenty of glass for out to 1000 yards or beyond IMO.

The benefit of the NXS 2.5-10 is the weight - it is only 20.5 oz. I have one on a seekins PH2 and it is my big game rifle out to 600 yards. I would stick with NF - I have an NX8 4-32 on a 6.5 PRC and love it.

I was already on the fence about the mark 5 based on reviews about issues holding zero. It sure looks good on a spec sheet though.

I’ve got some wiggle room on price and would probably be buying a demo or even used if I run across a deal. Weight isn’t a huge concern for me either.

I appreciate the replies.

If weight/size isn’t the primary concern the NXS 2.5-10x42 is really a step below the ATACR or even NX8 series. The glass, illumination and reticle design could use an update. The latest model NXS 2.5-10x42 was last updated in 2013 and it shows a bit.

The little NXS is holding onto a market niche because of its weight to durability ratio being unmatched.

I borrowed a friend’s NX8 4-32 a few days ago and was impressed with it. Good glass and not terribly heavy on the rifle. Started looking into the 2.5-20 and was ready to pull the trigger but found a deal on a 4-16x42 ATACR.

Between the advice here and the price, it seemed like the best option.

I’d personally look hard at the nx8’s, both are outstanding unless you end up with a bad sample. The 2.5x20 is actually my favorite NF scope with the 4-32 second, that includes any atcar. The apparent fov kills the atcar and nxs for me personally for the type of hunting I do.
