Hello all,

I am super new to this forum and relatively still new to hunting. I have been mule deer hunting various times in area 10 but pulled a bull elk tag for areas 72-74 this time for rifle season Oct22- Nov 5th. I keep seeing posts about the wilderness area and not much else about where to find bulls in the area. This being my first elk hunt period and having a completely new area to me, I would love some tips or input if you guys could help a brother out. I will have a partner for a few days but plan to do most of the trekking myself. Any advice for spots to camp/ enter the wilderness/ or any easier hunting positions would be much appreciated.

Hey there LoneWolf,
I've got the same tag for the November 6-20 hunt. I've harvested cows from 74 and seen plenty of bulls, when of course I had a cow tag. This will be my first bull tag up there and frankly it's intimidating. My neighbor also has the same tag as you, so I've asked him to spot, stock, and tie one to a tree for me. Yeah right. So much depends on snow, if there is much this year, and pressure. You'll still be hearing rut bugles, so finding them shouldn't be too hard, access and clean kill is the challenge. I've had good luck see bulls on the western edge of 72, near Jarbidge, where it's steep and deep. Clean instant humane harvest is important for me, so I try to get as close as possible and avoid shots much outside of 300 yds. I also hoof it, no motorized assist, so I take the spouse to help pack out, had to have neighbor help once. You can try entering in 72 from the south Mary's River area, again depending upon snow, but I've found this to be a pathway for them once winter hits and hiking this area isn't too killer. You have a lot of options, so study the topographic. Good luck to both of us!

Thanks One-shot, I was just checking out previous burn areas around that area and depending on weather it looks like a great place for a base to start hoofing it. Good luck to you and thanks for the heads up. Definitely seems intimidating with the steep terrain, wish I had the time to scout previously but I guess satellite images are going to have to work.

I had a spike tag in there last year and hunted the O'Neil Basin Country. Some snow hit the first week of october and 95% of it was burned off by the end of my hunt. I got into several mature bulls that hung out on north slope thick stands of fir. Your hunt is post rut, you should look for pockets of habitat with water, feed and isolation since they will trying to recoup after the rut. Good luck!

Hey,
Thanks. The O'Neil basin looks like it has some promising areas but I am guessing to avoid the big open plains and glass the creek and valleys. Looks like a decent spot to get to and even accessable by ATV or truck if needed for retrieval.

You're going to have to work hard to get to where the mature bulls are. Always seeing some in the SE side of the wilderness deer and cow hunting. Buddy had the late bull tag a few years ago. Most of them will be high. Some will be in little hidey holes. PM me for more info.

I'd definitely like to know where a good area to go would be and any details you could share. Not sure I can pm you since I'm still a newbie.

There are bulls in 73. Pretty much exactly where the Hunter Information sheets say they are. My dad had a 73 tag when it was a seperate hunt.
