I went yesterday and it was a pretty good show. It was nice talking with all the folks. The crowd was pretty hefty for a Friday. Anyone go today?

Once upon a time I told them I would belong if they promise to only send a renewal notice. I didn't want anything else. I got about ten years and then I was deluged with letters, ads and junk. I walked away and haven't missed them in any way.

As a teenager I felt duty bound to pay for my own NRA memberships for all the good work for sportsmen, hunters and target shooters. Then the focus moved away from being non partisan, doing things that made sense, and walked away from 1/3 of all hunters and gun owners who were independents or Democrats and became a direct path for dollars to go from sportsmen’s pockets to the good old boy system. I was a Republican in the most red state in the country, but could see that wasn’t right. I could see back in the early 1990s that Wayne LaPierre just wanted to suck us dry and blow smoke up our butts. I never spent another dollar on memberships for myself or family members, cancelled a gun range membership that required NRA membership and even stopped shooting competitive events that required the same. For anyone shocked LaPierre was a crook, I could have told you that 25 years before it made headlines.

I am not a fan of the NRA but my gun range requires an NRA membership. Entrance is free for members. In any case, I was there to talk to the manufacturers of the items I like to use rather than support the NRA. The only option out there that is similar is the SHOT Show but that has limited access.
