I'm moving my family up there next week from southern California and have a couple questions for those of you in the area. I know Sportsmen's is up there and Kuiu but what are some good archery shops and gunsmiths? I was raised up there but didn't start hunting until I moved to so cal.
And feel free to provide GPS of all your best hunting spots!

What town or county? Can't really help without more specifics. Sounds like around Sacramento?

Wilderness Archery, Inc. is in rocklin. I watched them help my cousin over the course of about two months find and fit a bow for him. No pressure and they DO know how to set up a rig.

I second Wilderness Archery. Reasonable prices, good selection and generally good people. After going there a couple times you'll get to know the guys to try to use. Your moving to a good area, especially if you get moved towards Auburn. Lots to do, hunting and non hunting, easy access to airports, freeways and close to Nevada. Hope you enjoy your move.

Get ready to sweat....that lower ground near Sac has some hot summers...it at least cools off at night in the Auburnish foothills

Plenty of good Sporting goods outlets...and I'm sure gunsmiths though I'm a bowhunter- great carp shooting around in those lakes

Best taxidermist around is Robert that owns "Capture the Hunt" taxidermy just south of you

Check out absolute archery owned by Darin Mack in shingle springs next to placerville. He is very knowledgeable and does things right.

wilderness ARchery is hit/miss for me.

they used to have a guy that worked there, JD..he was amazing. bow set up was spot on. he taught me how to make sure a bow fit and shot well.

my second bow i bought, JD was not there anymore. whoa..way different experience. my bow went home with me so badly set up, it was impossible to bow tune. i didnt know enough to find the problem right away. essentially my bow was strung up wrong. to get a paper hole, the rest was so close to the riser, i only had my sight peeking part way from behind my riser. my center shot was less than half and inch.. they had the guy with the biggest wingspan paper tune my bow. and they did it behind closed doors.

will i shop there again? yea, probably. they have a great inventory..but i know more to filter out the bullchit.

welcome to NorCal bud..

How is a bow "strung up wrong"? Sounds like it did need some work.

The cables were running thru the roller guard wrong. Cable from the yoke was on the outside roller instead of the inside roller. Put crazy lean in the idler. Some big wig from Mathews called me to apologize. (So glad I had taken some close up pics of my bow - which I sent to their tech support) And they give me a cap. Whoopee!

It was brutal!

Ah I see. That would definitely cause you some problems.

I've been to Northern California once. On a school trip actually. Coming from Alabama it was neat to see the different topography. I'm heading to Redding soon but not for hunting. Would love to come chase some blacktails out there sometime.
