Moving to the flagstaff area later this year and really interested in calling/tracking lions. Any tips or experience in the area?

I've hunted elk and mule deer in 6a and 11m. Lots of roads in this general area. I've spent countless hours and hiked many miles and have never seen a lion or any sign of them. I have seen tweakers, college kids, yoga posers, homeless people, mountain bikers, hikers, bird watchers, mushroom hunters and even stumbled upon a nude photo shoot at sunset but never a lion. Hopefully someone else here knows where the lions are.

sounds like quite a party lol. AZ game and fish say they have them in some of the canyons in 6a and 5 but i wouldn't expect any lions to be around with all that activity.

how'd it go for you hunting mules and elk with that much going on in the units?

You might have better luck heading a little south to 22/23. More remote country and a healthy lion population.

Didn't tag out in 11m for cow elk but had 1 chance and had one bull come into a cow call. Didn't get a mule deer in 6a OTC Dec hunt but had lots of snow. Did tag out archery 6a elk after sitting water sun up to sunset for 5 days. For lions in that area I'd scour a Flatline Map or Onx to find an area as far away from roads as possible.

Hunted 8 for elk late season in 2018. I bought a lion tag in case we stumbled on one or tagged out early and we saw 2 lions (one from afar, one pretty close) but I never got a shot at one. We saw some lion tracks in the snow as well.

We didn’t tag out early so we never called or anything that was all just while elk hunting.

There have been several lions taken off of Mt Eldon Lookout trail which starts on the edge of city limits, mostly by lion guides with hounds, as the cats were attacking or harrassing hikers or their pets. There are lions in all the units around Flagstaff, but unit 9 is my favorite, I called one in and shot it with an electronic fawn in distress tape. I tracked it up and made stands about very 1/2 mile and got lucky. The Grand Canyon National Park is a nice sanctuary for cats to come out of and get whacked, flagman

Those units around flagstaff hold lots of lions. Dogs make it much easier to locate them, but after a dusting of snow, go drive the roads and try and cut tracks. It's super tough without dogs to actually locate the lion, but at least gives you an idea of the type of terrain they are in. During and after snow storms, the woods are alive with guides with dogs trying to cut tracks. A bunch of them do not even have clients, they just like getting their dogs the experience. Some of them, you can tag along with too. It's a rush and a bunch of work to try and keep up with the dogs.
