No Magnums

I like shooting my magnum?

Hell im itching to get into actual big bores.
If you like short barrels and wildcats check out B&M rifles, they are made by SSK in Ohio. I have 2 M70 WSM actions I want to build 458 B&M's for my son and I. Big performance smaller more packable rifles.

If the cartridge is named “magnum” it’s a magnum. 3006 is not a mag .308, but 30-378 is. The 30-378 won’t make anything deader than 3006.

I don’t see recoil as the issue, I don’t see the Mag niche now with all the great bullets available. Bullets matter more than volume of powder and velocity of bullets.
There are some "non magnums" that are pretty powerful
357 Magnum is less than a 357 Herrett
375 H&H Magnum is less than a 375 Cheytac
416 Rem. Magnum is less than a 416 Rigby
500 S&W Magnum is less than a 50 BMG

I have a 300 weatherby mag (stays int the safe for the most part), 300 win mag for 1000 + yard steel and occasional long distance elk, a 44 mag, and a 22 mag.

My 280 ai’s ballistics match up or outperform a 7mm mag so the deer, elk, pigs, goats, and sheep I’ve killed with it don’t know it’s not a mag.

Curious what load you're using in a 280 AI that outperforms whatever 7mm magnum you didn't specifically mention?

Why not shoot big bullets fast! Why not shoot smaller bullets a touch slower! Magnum fan myself, non magnum fan myself......I like em all alot!! Every time I think I have my "life" rifle, another comes along to tickle my fancy that I must have haha

I suppose if I could only choose one rifle in one caliber for the rest of "life", given dreams to travel the world hunting one day (retirement dreams), I would chose the trustry ol 340 Weatherby. But you can also say 340 Weatherby Magnum and meet both criteria.

At one point I liquidated all my magnums, but over the past two years I’ve accumulated a few.
Main reason, more energy when I have no other option than a longer than normal shot.
I know accuracy is paramount, but I like adding plenty of energy to the equation too.

This is interesting. Look at commercial Nosler ABLR. The 280 AI (Nosler 150 gr ABLR) hits 1800 FPS about 950 yards while the 7mm Rem Mag (Nosler ABLR 168 gr) hits 1800 FPS about 850 yards.

It’s a hand load using re26 and nosler 160 gr accubonds. The reason I bought a 280ai is because with handloads, it can match or outperform a 7mm rem mag and you don’t have to deal with a belted case. It is my all around favorite caliber.

Everyone should have one.

I thought it might be RE26, seems like alot of guys are getting excellent performance with it but I haven't used it myself. Have you loaded any heavier bullets? I really like the 180s in my 7 RM.

I have a cooper in 280 rem. with 26” barrel that chronos faster with 140 grain than my 24” barrel Remington in 7 mag with 150 grain. Both were factory loads. The theoretical differences of AI and 7 mag aren’t very much and I’m sure match each other in various rifles since each are individuals and not bound by theories, and some 7s might give better performance and widen the gap. But with 2” of barrel that particular 280 with out being improved snaps on the heels of that particular 7mag. Want to avoid the belts maybe just add a little barrel length and throw a saddle on the powder your already paying for and burning.

I tell ya one thing: if they’d have had those magnums back in the day, I’d have 2 less kids.

You should be following the thread about how to tape a barrel. Apparently it makes the shots go way off.

The straight .280 is a good cartridge. The .280 AI is better, excepting availability. Neither, however, are appreciably more efficient than a 7mm RM and, thus, will not out perform it when due diligence is given to optimizing all three cartridges. To be fair, the difference in terms of point blank range is only a few meters.

If you’re a dedicated hand loader, there are guys pushing straight .284 upwards of 2900 fps with 180s and RE17. That‘s old news, too. Now, as a lover of the -06 family, I am obliged to prefer the .280 regardless of its less efficient design.

Do you need more than that? Likely not. That said, the three/four are similar enough that bullet selection and individual rifle variance matters.

I admit part of me is waiting for folks to start making .277 stuff with a G7 over .3, but I’m not holding my breath. Obligatory add these days: 6.5 CM does NOT out perform any of the above.

There’s more “performance” on paper and between the ears than anywhere else.

After doing a fair bit of shooting on critters, my observations are that great majority of cartridges under .30 perform more or less the same under normal shooting conditions. I couldn't tell any difference between the 7-08, 6.5CM, and the 270WIN. They all worked pretty darn well when I stuck a bullet from one through the ribs of a caribou. Come to mind, the .308WIN goes in that same boat too.

I can't tell much difference on game between the 30-06, 7RM and the 300s either.

I think 16Bore is dead on the money, there's a lot more difference in our minds than in the field...despite what the marketing wonks want us to believe. Of course- I guess when the job is to sell a product that lasts generations, the only way to generate sales is to make you think what you've already got just isn't good enough anymore.

Bingo! And that’s why I don’t own a mag CF rifle. Dead is dead in the field. If VA ever legalizes 223 CF for big game that’s all I’ll use here.
