My plans to hunt this unit with a buddy who has hunted it several times fell apart when he drew Oregon. Curious if anyone has experience with bowhunting with outfitters out of Magdalena or Datil? Or someone they would definitely avoid?
Thank you.

I drew the tag. I have been given lots of advice to DIY, and that is my goal, but a unit that is 24hrs drive from home, a great tag, 2 days to scout....makes me rethink it just a little bit. Do you feel it is a doable DIY solo?

Lots of good ground in 13, if you have any experience to draw on I would say your in good shape to do it on your own.

I have this tag as well. Was just over in the unit on a scout trip. It's totally doable solo DIY, that's what I'll be doing.

In terms of guides I would check out Black Mountain Outfitters (bmohunts.com).

Might try it DIY before you call BMO. Or if you do want to go with BMO, check out references and MAKE SURE TO CHECK WITH HUNTERS FROM LAST YEAR. I know of several hunters that went with them in NM last year and they were less than impressed. Bad situation and promises made by BMO to make it right and they never did.

I did a diy muzz hunt about a dozen years ago and got a nice 330 bull. My hunting partner that also had a tag didnt get one and this was the only bull we saw in 6 days. So success but not great numbers.

Ought to be extremely good this year! They have had about ten years worth of rain since august of last year. The drought had that whole area squeezed for quality last year but, some good bulls were still around. I hunted with BMO last year in unit 12 and will be there again this fall. If you choose to go that route ask for guides Thomas or Dakota. They worked really hard and knew their stuff. However it turns out good luck! Beautiful country, plenty of elk and not too steep!
