I am trying to decide the best way to mount my Nightforce NXS 2.5-10 for an upcoming dall sheep hunt in the NWT. My rifle is a proof research glacier ti/ 6.5 CM, so the action on it is a lone peak arms ti. Leaning towards either lightweight 20moa rail and low seekins rings or hawkins lightweight 20 moa one piece rings and no rail. Overall weight is a consideration but only 2-3 oz difference seems minimal. Main concern is stability/zero throughout travel/hunt which Is why I am trading out my swaro z5 3-18 and talley rings for the nightforce. Worked ok but never 100% satisfied with tracking and return to zero.

I would stay with the Talley rings. The NF scope has enough come-ups on the turrets that you don’t need a canted rail. I have my custom 708 setup that way.

I have two NF2.5-10s. One is on a LA 20 MOA Seekins aluminum rail and Seekins low aluminum rings. I think the weight increase is closer to 4+ oz net (with a bit longer rail). Also got a collection of 1" and 30mm Talley LWs in a freezer bag.

If your main concern is paying 4 more oz of burden for beefier stability (and straightness/zero stress!), go on rails and don't look back. Other is the straightness of your receiver, something a little rail bedding easily overcomes.

My 6.5 Fieldcraft wears a NXS 2.5-10 with Talley rings. I’ve never had a reason to doubt the integrity of this setup on my mountain hunts.
Also, it dials out to 1000 yards as is.

Hawkins over talleys. Not because you need the cant but because they are less likely to fail.

A rail usually gives you more flexibility to mount the scope where you want it. I have found that with my 2.5-10 NXS on a custom tikka, I couldn’t get it mounted back far enough with one piece rings. Even with a mountain tactical rail the bell of the scope hits the rail if mounted far back enough. It would need a different rail or some of the front of the rail milled off. These problems went away with a SWFA 3-9 because it’s longer tube and bell make it more flexible to mounting positions. I don’t know why people think being ultra short is a good thing with scopes..

The same nxs works fine in one piece rings on my xbolt.

I have the same action/scope.

I chose the Lone Peak rail and low Picatinny rings, due to the fact that I like the option of switching optics between different rifles.

The Hawkins rail is pinned to the action. I would assume the one piece rings are pinned as well. If they are pinned, I wouldnt even consider Talley's.

I will likely make the switch to drop a few ounces and to get my scope a touch lower. If I stay with the rail, I will likely switch to Farrel Extra Low rings. Lighter and shorter.

Ensure everything is degreased heavily before you mount the scope. Its amazing how much grease comes off, that will go along way to helping ensure your scope holds zero.

Was your tikka a long or short action that you couldn’t get the scope back far enough?

Tikka actions are only one length. The stock and LOP are the primary driver of my eye relief issues. My stock might have a longer LOP than factory.

I have a ton of faith in the Hawkins 1pc. Had them on a few rifles since they first came out with them and haven’t had a problem yet and one rifle with them has seen a few nasty falls and lots of airline travel. Even with a scope as heavy as an ATACR no problems at all. Make sure you really degrease them well they come pretty oily.

If you want a set of Highs for a Lone Peak SA I have an extra set I would sell.

Finally got around to mounting the scope. Went with the hawkins rings. With the NXS 2.5-10 plus rings comes in 7lb1oz. Getting ready to head to NWT for a dall sheep hunt in August with Gana River.

I ran a 2.5-10 NXS as well this last year but on a lever gun (I have the 24mm obj version). Pretty fun set-up and I just used my standard low 30mm rings from ATRS.
As long as the bolt knob doesn’t hit the PTL should be good to go!
