Newfoundland Woodland Caribou

Anyone here hunted Newfoundland for woodland caribou recently? I am planning a trip for 2017 and debating between Woodland Caribou or Moose in Newfoundland, or heading west for an Elk hunt. Just looking to see if anyone has any advice or experience they might be able to provide. Any outfitter recommendations would be appreciated as well. Most of the posts here seem to be Alaska-related or western Canada. Being in New England, Newfoundland is probably the closest place I can hunt Moose or Caribou.

I hunted in 2004 for moose with Rob and Sue Folks of the Hide Away Lodge. They are out of Grand Falls NF. The guys I went with were there many times before me any have been back many time since with great success. I personally never saw a moose on our trip. We had 6 guys in camp 4 got moose (1 Bull-3 cows). Another guy missed. We also hunted in hurricane force winds (Hurricane Ivan) with a ton of flooding. They were great people with a lot of moose hunting knowledge. Great meals and a clean camp. I highly recommend them. We drove the 36 hr trip from Pittsburgh PA.

This sounds like an awesome trip! It seems like it would be a good one for a westerner to get to hunt back east.

I'm leaning towards woodland caribou only because I am reading of declining herd populations almost everywhere. With the George River herd closed to hunting and its future uncertain, I figure I should take the opportunity while it is available. I don't consider myself a trophy hunter but I would love to have a caribou in white mane mounted.

I met the guys at Cinq Cerf outfitting as a sportsman show in New England two years ago. They were great guys and were just starting out as outfitters. They do mostly moose hunting though, but seeing as how I've been able to meet them and have face to face conversations with them its a bit of a comfort factor. I'll be going to that same show (Springfield Sportsmans) in 3 weeks so I'm sure I'll run into them and a few more outfitters while I am there.

Great, maybe we will be there at the same time even. I'd love to do a Moose and Caribou combo hunt but I'd need three more chest freezers for all that meat along with white tail hunting back home......

I hunted Newfie a few years back. Hunted with Efford's hunting adventures and killed this outstanding 44 inch bull moose and a All time B&C woodland on the same day. Newfoundland is a trip everyone should do once in their life's. Great people and great hunting if you get away from the roads. My hunt was a fly in hunt. PM me if you want to know more.
