Hey guys been reading a lot about tipis on here as they seem to be quite the popular choice for a lightweight shelter. I ended up picking the Sierra Designs Origami 3, with footprint, for a really good price. I thought this would be a great entry level tipi. I have a couple questions maybe you experts can help me solve.

Bugs... So I know one of the benefits of tipis is that they are floorless. Benefits of this is that it cuts down on weight and no need to take your boots off going inside right? I live in AZ so we don't necessarily have the bird sized mosquitoes, but I'm more worried about spiders. I dont mind one or two, but on two occasions now where I have been hunting I have come across areas that are LOADED with spiders at night.. like the ground looks like it has dew all over it, because all of the spiders eyes reflecting look like water drops.. Needless to say I wouldn't feel so hot putting up a tipi where I could easily end up with over 20+ spiders in the tent with me. Another time camping, same thing happened. No spiders visible during the day, night time comes around and spiders EVERYWHERE crawling all over the tent like a horror film.

So my question with bugs could you have maybe a mosquito net that would span the gap from the ground to the tipi? Or do you think you would need a whole tipi sized mosquito net?

My other question is I am looking at making my own stove (not sure how crowded it will be in this size tipi). I am looking to replicate this build http://www.rokslide.com/forums/showthread.php?12385-Another-DIY-Stove I know I am going to have to install a stove jack.. Is the only place to get one from bearpaw? Would I save more space putting the stove closer to the edge of the tent as opposed to the middle by the tent pole?

Sorry for the long winded post, just excited about this setup and looking forward to getting out and using it. Would love to see people's set ups showing their stove location. Thanks!

I personally don't use one but a lot of guys use a nest in their tipis. As far as the stove placement goes as you move away from the centre pole you get close to the tarp. The steep angle of the tipi doesn't allow you to get to far from the centre with the stove. Also the higher the stove jack the higher the chimney support.

I use Kifaru floorless shelters exclusively for all my camping needs. Never have had an issue. I don't use a bivy or nest. I've camped from Georgia to California in a floorless shelter. Never had an issue with bugs.

You can buy stove jacks from titanium goat as well. they'll cut to fit your shelter if you provide the make/model info.

You could also run a bivy or personal size mosquito net.

You can also spray your shelter with Permethrin to keep the spiders off.

You can get stove jacks from Titanium Goat and Seek Outside also.

Avid Hunter. Its good your asking. Because with going Floor-less comes some new little responsibilities you would do well to learn. As far as Mosquito the guys have nailed it. Running a Nest inside the tipi or throwing one in your doorway at night if you want to leave it open. As far as on the ground. You would do well to shake out your boots each morning and at night before bed dump your sleeping pad and shake out your bag. This will keep you from getting in bed with a Spider or Scorpion. I have had a few bugs in the Tipi here and there I just dump them back outside when i find them. They dont bug me much but Im careful not to throw on boots with one in it or jump in a bag I haven't shaken. Thats my take on it. Also another trip is make sure your shelter is seated to the ground.

I like the looks of that personal mosquito net. Basically could go to bed and not worry about anything joining me in the middle of the night. I'll have to look into the permethrin spray as well. Thanks for the links.

All good points. I always make it a point to shake out my boots anyways. I really don't mind bugs much at all. I just had those two instances where there were hundreds of spiders on the ground that it got me thinking. Thanks for the tips.

confusious says if 100s of spiders on ground dont pitch tipi there..... :D I couldnt resist. Yeah id probably avoid that area. Try moving to a different landscape unless that isnt an option. We are spoiled here in the Colorado Rockies. We dont get alot of intimidating bugs that we have to worry about. Something about being a Mile High or better really isnt the best habitat for them. Good luck on your quest. Hope you find your niche.

Six years ago I set up my wall tent and camp and went hunting. Came back to a tent full of quarter-sized spiders. They were everywhere, even inside my sleeping bag. This was at almost 11k feet......never seen such a thing. I would guess a couple hundred of them. Then last year I took my daughter during rifle season and they were everywhere while hunting.....running across the top of the snow. I hate spiders.
