New Strings (needed) What to buy, where to source?

So I need to replace the strings on my bow. Way over due. Give me suggestions, and best place to get them. I have a press and will do the work myself. Ive been pretty out of the archery world, other than just shooting what I have, for quite some time. So I really dont know whats out there, good or bad.

I looked at 60x briefly, and have read a little about JBK. Thats about the extent of my new string knowledge at this point.

I am my local pro shop. I havnt used a shop outside of my basement in almost 20 years. Time is super limited to me and the nearest “pro shop” is over 30 mins away. I cant justify burning an hour or 2 for something I can buy online, and probably cheaper.

Im still shooting a 14 yr old Bowtech Destroyer 340. I dont need them super quick, mine are still ok to shoot, they just need replaced sooner than later. So if it takes a week or 3, I dont care. Im just going to overhaul my bow now (new strings, rest, sight) so I dont have to worry about it this spring/summer and can just shoot it all summer hopefully without any changes.

Thanks for the heads up on the 60x strings. I was getting that vibe when they werent mentioned one time.

Catfish Custom or Gas. I just put catfish on mine last summer and they are great strings. The VEC99 strings are waxless and don’t stretch.

? I've never had an issue with Vapor Trails. I've probably had 15 sets since 2004. Both of my Bowtech Prodigys have them on their now.

Personally I like 452x, there's not too much difference in any maker, assuming they are laid up correctly.


Can nerd out on different fibers, but 452x is really stable.

Always measure before installing, no matter who made them.

I had back to back sets of vec 99 strings from Catfish with 90 degrees of erratic peep rotation. He's now added a warning that he won't warranty for peep rotation. How he gets recommended so much is beyond me.

What bow are you putting strings and cables on. If it’s a Mathews, I would not recommend Gas. The way they make their cables, if you don’t twist the yoke splitter end correctly, and enough, you will absolutely 100% be under draw weight. I say go with something that’s made the correct length and ready to install. I have had ZERO problems with Threadz. I’ve used Threadz for many years on any bows.

If you talk to Gas they will tell you that the calls they get for bows being underweight is due to the cables being installed incorrectly. For the life of me I don’t know why they make the yoke splitter end in two separate bullies that have to be twisted during installation. It only invites the opportunity for incorrect install. Pointless.

Vapor Trail has been pretty bad. Tons of twisting needed to get to speck.

GAS Freakshow have been real good.

John’s Customs are awesome.

I’m going to try the wax less material from Unbound Archery on the next set.
