Well done, that looks like the area I rifle hunted this year. What made it tough - the lack of bucks?

Congrats! I just got back from unit 30 myself. I ran out of daylight stalking a 3x4 that was very similar to yours, but smaller. Southern NM is tough, but hunting mule deer in rut is almost as good as it gets.

Nice buck Trial! Looks like a buck I saw chasing a doe on my first day. Beyond that I witnessed no rut activity, did you guys see the same lack of activity? These warm windy conditions are tough too.

Very little rutting activity through the week. Movement in general seemed suppressed.

I hunted off Dark Canyon Rd, just about 10-12 miles south of Carlsbad. It was 14 degrees and blowing snow when I left my truck Friday morning. It was 19 when I got back after dark. I spotted 17 muleys that day, including the 3x4, 2 forkies and a couple spikes. The 3x4 was running the show, pushing a doe everywhere except the spot I needed her to be. I located him again on Sunday and after a 6 hour spot and stalk, ran outta time. Got to within 80 yards of his hot doe, but only 120 yards of him. I'd kill more deer if they'd just cooperate a little better.

Sounds like you had a great hunt nonetheless!
