So when I began my plan to for my first western hunt for 2nd rifle this year I hopped on here for boot recs. All I ever used for whitetail on flat land was pull on boots, and I spent years looking for ones I loved and settled into Irish Setters. So I get on here and Crispi seemed to be the most touted. I tried Nevada’s and Guide’s, and had the same issues with both pressuring the top of my foot when stepping. In a Hail Mary attempt I ordered a pile of Danners, Irish Setters, and a couple others I can’t remember through Amazon prime wardrobe.

Wouldn’t ya know the Irish Setters Ravine’s fit perfect. So then off I go, maybe put 15 miles on them in the short time before our hunt. Proceeded to put 35-40 miles on them in steep country I couldn’t have even imagined on my 2nd rifle CO elk hunt. Not a single blister or sore foot the whole time. Only time my feet got wet is when I got stupid crossing a deep creek. Perfect, right? Well, I slipped, a lot. The tread is not near aggressive enough IMO.

So from anyone who likes Irish Setters, what else do you like? I need a good wide boot with a wide toe box. Rules out Schnees from what I’ve gathered. Currently considering Kenetrek? Or should I leave well enough alone?

Take a look at the Kenetrek Mountain Extremes. I just picked up a pair the other day and love them. I have wide feet and I was able to get away with a regular width. They fit great and are very supportive.

Thats my #1 right now, thanks!

Not sure how soon you are looking at purchasing but Scheels has them on sale for $345 now. Its a heck of a deal on them.

I have Kenetrek Mountain Extreme NI boots and love them. I have a wide foot, as well. Fwiw, Irish Setter and Danners fit my feet great, too.

Just looked at my Ravines again and man, if they just had more tread. There’s less than 1/8”...

From looking at those boots, it’s worth trying the Salomon Quests. Mine did well this season and I never had any issues, whether climbing or packing an elk out. They aren’t stiff enough to be a real mountaineering boot but worked out for me.

Irish Setter boots should be able to be resoled. I would look into putting an aggressive Vibram sole on the ones that you have if they fit good.

Alright, on a whim I ordered a couple pairs off mountain style boots off moosejaw that had extremely aggressive soles.

First, the La Sportiva Karakorum. I should note I ordered this one just to try, if it had fit perfect I'd have returned them and ordered the GTX style from Europe (not available in NA), though I had read reviews about them being narrow. This was true, though I liked the hug on the side of my feet, the toe box is just too narrow. It also had about 1/8" (guessing) of heel lift. Tried my irish setters on again and had no noticeable lift at all. Perhaps why I got no blisters at all on my trip? Back they go.

Other one I ordered was the Scarpa Grand Dru. I really like how they fit, except the heel lift is a bit more noticeable. I'd say between 1/8" and 3/16". I hurriedly tried a couple of lacing techniques that helped, I can play with them more later too.

My question being, is that too much to accept and try to make work? I always carry Leukotape with me, so I'll quickly cover any hot spots. They were very comfortable to be such a stiff boot. And the tread is just gnarly!

We’ll just played with the lacing, couple of surgeon knots on the scarpas and they are good to go!

I sent you a PM if you love the Red Wing boots

Don’t want to hijack but, I’m boot searching also. Best work boots I’ve found are Redwings and I hunted in a pair of Irish setters the last 2 seasons. I’m planning a back country trip for 19 season either into the Sierras or near the Marbles and curious what’s your suggestion was?
