Need a pack, on a budget, do I go new or used?

There are some close out mystery ranch packs on mountain archery. Might be able to pick one up for around 300ish. Try using the discount code too. Could save you a little more

Bumping for other recommendations. I’m in a similar position as the OP. Moving back to Idaho in a couple weeks and will be on a budget this season due to cost of moving. Tempted by the $400 MR Metcalf, but also wondering if I should just get a hiking pack this year.

As said before, if you are elk hunting, that spotting scope will be dead weight most of the time. As for packs, i run a seek outside Peregrine and a Unaweep. You possibly could find a deal on a Unaweep as its been out a few years.

If your still looking for a pack Argali is running 20% off Mystery ranch. Code "Mystery".

Depends how tough you want to be. I went from a 70's Kelty to a Kifaru. What an amazing difference. I would definitely recommend going with a used higher end pack in your budget than going with a cheaper new pack. I can load my Kifaru to twice the load in the Kelty, and it feels the same just because of how the higher end packs fit. But I also ran that Kelty loaded up and all over the Sierras just because that's what I had.

I will also add that I was lucky enough to borrow a spotting scope for 2 seasons. I carried it the 2nd season just because I thought maybe I didn't give it a fair shake. After 2 days into the second season, I cut it from my pack. I won't carry one again unless I get into really open terrain.

Thanks for all of the good advise everyone!

Ended up finding a barely used Seek Outside Brooks that fit my budget. Big pack when expanded but it is light and packs down pretty small. I can fit a bunch of stuff in that pack and I might end up using my Cabelas Scout daypack once we are camped back in and hunting.

I question carrying the spotting scope in my pack all the time as well as it takes up space and isn't something I consider a necessity when running around. It should be helpful in glassing from the truck or somewhat close to camp though and I got it for a good price.

Hopefully I am all set on gear now and can focus on figuring out where to camp / hunt and other details, Pretty jacked up to be elk hunting soon.

The season is almost upon us!

A lot of guys swear by spotting scopes. So if it's your thing, don't let anyone talk you out of it. Glad you got a pack. Good luck out there.

I'm going bowhunting in Sept and we are planning on car / backpack hunting. In the past I have car camped with others that had much of the gear but that is not the case this time therefore I need to purchase a fair amount of gear like a spotting scope, packable tent, sleeping gear...

I have used a Cabelas Scout pack as a day pack in the past and it worked well but I need something larger for backpack hunting. Maybe something in the 5000 - 7000 cubic inch range. With all of the other gear I need to purchase my budget is tight and I cant afford a $500-$600 dollar pack.

Something like an Eberlestock Just One pack or similar at around ~$350 is my max budget. I have also thought about some of the frame packs that I see for around $120. I figure there are some good used packs out there that may be a better option. Could someone recommend some good used packs to look for in that range?

Thanks!

If you need other equipment I would recommend you check out Moosejaw.com. You can buy a Mystery Ranch Terraframe 80 for $449 but they have a 30% of the purchase towards your next purchase so that means you would be getting the pack for $310 and have $140 available for other items you need. I took advantage of this last year and after buying my son and I packs I was able to get my sleeping bag and pad and a few smaller items free. Also if you havent yet register to activejunky.com and they will give you a rebate 1/4ly 10-15% on your purchase and this is cash for anything you want to use it for.

Can't beat an Osprey for the money. The Aether is a great pack. Seems like you can find a lot of good used deals on older Kifaru, Exo, Stone Glacier as well in the classifieds on here

Sorry if I am breaking rules by posting this, but I have a MR Pintler that I ordered in the completely wrong size for me I will probably be putting on Ebay soon. I am hoping to get $350 net to me.
