Name and Number on arrow wraps

Tell me if this is stupid but is anyone putting their name and phone number on their hunting arrow wraps? I'm in the process of ordering some new ones from one stringer and saw the option for custom text. I have only lost one animal to date archery hunting but I have found 2 elk with an arrow stuck in them over the last 15 years of hunting.

This is by no means advocating leaving an animal to hope someone finds it for you.

This is actually a regulation in New Hampshire believe it or not.

I'd be more worried about some anti finding it and harassing me but you bring up a good point

Interesting. I think also when im at a public range that has a 3d course. I pick up lost arrows all the time that are not damaged that could be returned. Instead they go into a giant bin in the shed at the entrance thats kind of a free for all.

Posting this in the wrong section.

Needs to go in the traditional archery forum so those guys get their arrows back....

Our state archery association use to have clubs design their own cresting. That way after a field event, lost arrows could be returned to home clubs. This was of course back when people shot field archery with rerecurve.

Had no idea any state actually required it.

There is an archery kill program for hunting in Fairfax County Parks in VA.. One of the stipulations is something similar to this. Your arrows need to have your hunter ID number writting on the arrow. I had some custom printed arrow wraps done up because it was cleaner than trying to write my ID in sharpie marker.

I'm a fan of arrow wraps in general, because inevitably you loose a fletching or two and I'm not a fan of scraping carbon shafts with a razor blade. All you need to do is use a heat gun to warm up the wrap for removing it

Indeed, New Hampshire requires name and address on your arrows. I just write it small on my vanes.

What would you hope to be accomplishing by doing so, in a hunting situation?

I could maybe see the benefit from being at a large archery shoot.

Well it actually came to mind after watching a Meateater episode ( I got into watching it after all the noise he made on here) In one of the episodes he puts an arrow into a bull he couldn't find and luckily another hunter went out of his way to let him know he found it and they salvaged most of the meat. In cases where I had cell service I would call the person if I found an arrow with a number stuck in a bull. I would also hope someone else would do the same in return.

I would always hope that those types of situations never happen but we all know they do, why not put every advantage of recovering an animal in your favor?

The odds of someone contacting you are pretty dern slim. Maybe if someone is hunting a different species.

I know of more than one bull claimed in the time waiting to track.

Gotcha

I’ve come across an elk which died of an arrow, however, it was way past salvage. It was a while ago and handheld gps wasn’t as common as it is now, but now I would mark it and if I came across the person I’d let them know. If the arrow was sticking out I’d check but that’s about it.

I hear yeah on putting things in your favor, for me I’d pass on putting my info on there unless required by law, which is a completely different topic.

For the guys that have mentioned their states requiring it, what’s the thinking/reasoning behind it? You don’t do it for a bullet.

Maybe like if it was a Buck of a Lifetime? :ROFLMAO: I get where you are coming from, and I like hearing of any disadvantages that I may not have thought of.

I have heard rumor that some places require it to discourage long range shooting. There is some psychological change in a persons max range when their name is directly tied to the arrow. I don't know if it works but i like the concept. Longe range archery elk is out of control in eastern MT. Every year you hear about the guy arrowing 2 or 3 elk before they fill their one tag.

I have actually never heard of anyone doing this. Intriguing. I'd just fear like others have mentioned that by the time someone calls you with your arrow, the meat is past salvageable. Or what happens when your arrow breaks off on a running wounded animal? Or you have a clean pass through but couldn't find the arrow? I guess you only get the benefit if your arrow stays in the animal. Then again we all hope for a clean pass through on a good shot which would negate the effectiveness for your name/number on the arrow. Interesting, just thinking (writing) out loud.

When I first started bow hunting our state required you to put all of that information on your arrows, I personally would not want to start doing it again.

I used to frisbee golf with friends. We would find and lose frisbees all the time. But everyone puts their contact info on the bottom. It was a fun way to meet new people. Also a bunch of pot heads would hang out at the parks and sell discs they found. Pretty cool all in all.

No way I'd do that with my arrow hunting :)

I’d hang out at trailheads and sell arrows for pot… especially in Colorado

Well, I just went to an archery shoot where I had to have my initials on my arrows....

They worried I might shoot the wrong target and create some confusion or something.

That's not unlikely.
