What are peoples thoughts on the mystery ranch pop up 38? The primary use would be whitetail hunting in the Appalachian mountains and possibly a western hunt at some point. I am wanting to find something that is versatile.
I am a big fan of MR and the pop up line. I use mine for day hunting in PA and NY and have packed out a deer and a outlet of heavy loads with mine. They are great daypack and capable of hauling on occasion but for long or prolonged trips I would rather have a full size frame. But for something that is going to be in “daypack” mode 95% of the time, I haven’t found anything as compact and comfortable.
I upgraded from a 28 to a 38 a few weeks back. I don’t have any real time under the 38 yet but my impressions are they have slightly improved the frame and belt. The pack design seems fine with a little bit of slop on the top attachment (which can be improved by wrapping the buckles on the frame crossbar). The extra capacity means I don’t have to swap to a bigger pack in late season when I start hauling layers.
As mentioned above there are some good threads on this over in the backpack forum. This one has th most info:
First place I've seen this so far. Interesting looking pack. The innovative POP-UP 38 pack with its transforming frame allows multi-day hunters to haul out meat via the OVERLOAD SHELF™. This 38L pack facilitates the hunter's needing a larger pack option with the same game-changing frame. It...
Jack of all trades, master of none. I hear the new belt still sucks.
I had a 28 and it just doesn’t know what it wants to be. Doesn’t have the rigidity and belt to be a hauler but has too much rigidity, especially in the yoke, to be a day pack.
My .02 would be use your lightweight lock on as a frame with Molle suspension and belt. Lash a small hydration or fanny style pack to the stand and do the same with extra layers. You can turn the seat into a load shelf with a piece of parachord to haul deer back east.
Get a real hauler for hunting outwest and leave that in the truck if you can’t get the full deer out with your stand.
I have the pack and it seems to fit me well. I have it loaded with 65 pounds and hike the hills around my neighborhood once or twice per week. For me, it's a great pack for the money and the flexibility it allows.
