Due to an impromptu work interview, I had to cut my week elk hunt to two days. And the weather was also supposed to come in so I had to get it done fairly fast and I had originally hoped to get a large bull but I was going to just take a nice 6 point if I could find one. So my brother and I headed up to the hills in Unit 49 and found about 200 elk bedded right at daylight. We played the wind for a couple of hours and finally slipped into 451 yards where a 140 berger from a 6.5 saum found it's mark on the biggest bull of the bunch. 2.5 miles from the truck and a 1500 foot descent. We packed out everything except the rear quarters and we would do that the next day.
Jeff and I went in the next morning for the pack out and I was wrestling with taking my rifle being it was the last day of deer season and I still had a second tag. I was hunting for muy grande but told Jeff I would take a nicer 4 point or better. Low and behold, half way into the drainage, I spotted a deer up on the ridge and Jeff exclaimed that it was a decent 4 point. Once again, the 6.5 saum/berger combo did the job at 334 yards. Uh oh, now we have a deer down with the elk quarters still to go. I processed the buck and packed the entire deer down to the truck and Jeff, bless his heart, went up and packed 2 entire rear boned out elk quarters by himself. He is a stud.
So, the pink shirt. I have had this shirt, day one fleece camo for about 25 years. All my buddies say it looks pink in the photos but I tell them it is in at least 30 or so kill shots. No matter, it still works----you all can be the judge. Oh yeah, and its in two more photos...............
