On day one I did not have a ton of success finding a lot of bear sign and the glassing visibility in this area was not great either. My previous research on Google Earth did show some nice log out open areas. Once I arrived and got into the area I found they were a little grown up and not very easy to spot and stalk bears effectively. I think I was a little high and very close to the snow line on day one. I decided to drop some elevation where the grass was much greener. On the morning of the second day I was not seeing a ton of sign again. I decided I would try to use a predator call and blind call. I'm from Missouri and I love predator hunting, so I thought what the hell. The area had everything a bear needed and I was seeing some old sign, so I figured they should be in the area. I found a good open 360 viewng spot and setup to call. Just in case I called in something I was not wanting to call in. :) I used a fawn distress type call for a solid 25-30 minutes. I actually called in several deer, so I felt my calling was effective. I was just about to stand up, actually reaching for my pack and saw this bear running straight towards me at about 100 yards. He got to about 50 yards stopped and looked around. At first, I thought he saw me, but then he started scanning the log out, at that point I knew I was still undetected. The wind was perfect and he was coming from the direction I was hoping he would come from. After just a few moments, he turned back towards me and proceeded to run straight towards me again. I finally had to shoot him at about 25 yards. It was an awesome experience not only to be hunting solo but to actually call in this bear. I'm so excited to be finally living the dream in this amazing state. I'm already looking forward to the fall.

I love predator hunting, so calling just makes sense to me. I know it can be a little risky and you have to very careful, especially solo hunting. It was a rush for sure, especially blind calling, which is much harder and not as effective. You have to keep your head on a swivel for sure. Bears as most of you know come in so silent it is scary.

Cheers

Awesome bear! Love these spring bear pics. This hunt has been on my short list for a while.
