Must haves:
  • Knife
  • Water Filter/Storage
  • Fire Starter
  • Weapon/Ammo
  • Cordage

With just those few things you would be amazed at what you can do, everything else is for the most part gravy and convenience.

the bolt for said rifle.........

Have seen that happen to a buddy before. He cleaned his rifle, set the bolt on a nearby window sill while cleaning the rest of the gun, and when he got to his stand the next time he went out....no hunting for him. Haha I’ve also fallen guilty of the wrong tag packed unfortunately, but luckily noticed before going in the field and possibly getting checked by a warden

Sleep system is generally worth taking too.

I've forgotten my tarp before, easy to forget the basics.

I like to group gear together and lay it out in front of me to make sure it's all there

It's quite unsettling to drive to your favorite Elk spot in the middle of the rut only to find you left your bugle tube home on the kitchen table.

TP or baby wipes are a must. My first pack expierence was horrible due to sub par sleep system. Proper clothing makes a huge difference. Most of all, bring the positive and leave the negitve at home.

Flashlight of some sort. Duct tape/rescue tape. Game bags. Coolers for meat (start with optimism).

Leave duplicates of things at home. You rarely need more than one of whatever it is, except socks and toilet paper. Bring extra socks and toilet paper. Never trust a gas station to keep their crapper stocked.

The guys that have come out to the west with me on hunts always pack two or three of everything and eat up space in the truck. Get good gear and you don't need 3 of everything. You also don't need a fresh change of clothes for each day.

Good luck on your hunt!!

silver ware - 2 different trips buddies forgot this
sleeping bag - one of these guys also
tag- one of same guys
correct barrel for rifle- I brought wrong barrel once, ammo did not fit
bolt- get the correct bolt dummy. I took a mag bolt for an 06 once. I knew I had one shot and might not get the case out. did not matter as no game presented itself.

Early Deer in Utah speculates that you are backpacking in and doing a spot and stalk. If that is the case, then you need water and a way to get more water. You also said rookie pointers, so I'd find a good camp spot prior to your hunt. Nothing like searching for a camp spot in the dark in a place you have never been before. My definition of flat is very different in the summer when I've got plenty of time to inspect a camp spot compared to it being completely dark, out of breath, and wanting to set up camp to eat dinner plus get a good nights rest. Last thing I'll say is a glassing pad. Yeah buddy, these make a difference! Imagine instead of sitting on a rock/the hard ground you are sitting on a "cushion".

After forgetting things over the years, I now have an Excel spreadsheet that is a checklist covering all the different hunts I do. Makes it much easier than trying to mentally remember everything.

An easy way to remember your release is to wrap it around your bow string every time you put it back in the case.

1st day of MT elk hunt I was fortunate enough to come across a bull, when I got an arrow out of my quiver I realized I'd left my broadheads on the other arrows in my bow case, can't shoot em with field points...
it all turned out for the better, I arrowed a stud on day 10

I use an app called Wunderlist. It’s updated often as I add/subtract items I believe necessary. When I’m ready to pack it can be exported in checklist format so the packing is a breeze. Being a gear junkie I tend to have duplicates of some items so I may -or may not if my wife reads this - have a preprinted list in a tub with gear for a given trip. After starting this a few years ago forgotten items no longer occur. And I find that very little excess is packed as I can edit the list mid trip.
