They should have been banned for life from coming back to Mt but no as little as 2 years and they can come back. 652 is supposed to be a trophy unit and they took all kinds of mule deer bucks off there. Fines weren't stiff enough
I'll agree with this. Having friends that burned points for that tag only to question why they were not seeing the quality of deer... Wonder no more

I was just reading a story about a guy was convicted of poaching, he got a $25K fine and 18 months to 5 years prison sentence. He also got a lifetime suspension of hunting license. He shot 9 trophy bucks. Story had a picture of bucks on the ground with wardens standing behind them. What a slime ball.

That was in lower Michigan. We are happy those penalties were tougher

Juice don't match the squeeze there I would say! How much did they spend on it in those two years?

Most hunters go over board when wanting some crazy fines and penalties but I agree these seem light though I do not know all the details obviously!

for the life of me I can't figure out why these punishments are always so light. Any poaching related citation should be minimum 5-year ban and could argue should be a lifetime ban! Does anybody know if these criminals are allowed to buy points in states during their 24-month hunting ban? Once convicted and entered into the Interstate Wildlife Violator Compact these guys should also have all their points zeroed in every state (but who am i kidding, if they're poachers they probably don't waste their time & money on points & licenses)

Seems like maybe only 1% of poachers get a sentence worth anything. These guys arent starving, trying to feed their families. They are POS’s.

Fine them the license/tag fee for every person that hunted the unit during their poaching. Trophy fines on top of that. Make them pay for the cost of investigation to the state, and how about a bonus fine that goes to the warden? Those guys arent paid enough. Forfeiture of vehicles, guns, gear, and take away their right to own a firearm for the worst repeat or multiple offenders (some guys make honest mistakes). Revoking hunting rights is a nothing burger. All that plus 6mo’s+ jail time and make this mandatory so judges cant go easy on them.

Only way to stop it is make it so unappealing to do. Slaps on the wrist dont work.

I was just reading one out of MT the other day, a guy was sentenced for killing a moose and lost his privileges for life, sometimes the sentencing just seems so arbitrary

Poaching should be a felony. They’re talking about privilege loss - that’s as stupid as gun free zones. They’re poachers, do you think they care if they can’t buy a hunting license?

Come on! Those fines are cheaper and suspension shorter than the tags I draw!
