I am looking at making a last ditch effort at the end of the month to punch my tag. The original area I hunted isn't looking very promising that late. Not looking for anything exact but what are some good options to look into? Figured I would give it shot on here. PM's welcomed

Depends a lot on what part of the state you are looking at and weather, but generally by the end of the season you should start thinking about winter range if it's been snowing in the high country and really cold. Many state wildlife management area were purchased and designated expressly for elk winter range, so that's one starting point. Elk may or may not be on their winter range yet, but they will be heading that way. Think about where the elk were at during the end of October and where they will want to be in December...they'll probably be closer to the latter.

I'm right there with you because I just became a resident. I'm not even worried about antlers this year, I'll be happy getting out and notching a tag on a cow. I'm just wanting meat in the freezer at this point! Planning a trip or two over the next few weekends.

Well that's easy. As big as possible! Haha But seriously, I am just hoping to get into elk in general. Definitely not asking for someone to give up a honey hole.

The Dillon area generally has the most elk. Odds are low of coming across anything other than a cow or raghorn, but I'd head to that area if I wanted to fill a tag.

Make sure you check the regs if you head to the Dillon area, most districts don't allow cows to be taken on general tags.

Big bulls will be up high in chest deep snow. Hard as hell to get to but not really hard to spot them.

Agreed, but you never know. I saw a 300 class bull get shot less than 200 yards off an interstate frontage road on public land yesterday. Lucky guy but not much of a hunt.

No longer in the boat with you!
