Looking for access info for the 690 archery only tag. Area is mostly private ground and I have been researching and getting a little permission here and there, so mostly what I need is info on good public areas to check out and access points to them! Any info is greatly appreciated, I burned 16 preference points to get this tag!! P.S. Not afraid to walk!

16, I'm right behind ya at like 12 because I skipped a few years lol.
Don't bother with the Cow Creek Ranch. The guy is a jerk. I tried to go out there to help him with problem cows during the damage hunt last year. He set me up with a small piece to hunt for two days. I covered it in the two days easily and no elk. Some sign but no elk. Then it's 50 miles to Chinook to get cell service to call the guy to get another two days. And no answer!
Your best bet is Chris Faber. I guess now days before you apply you pay a 50 dollar trespass fee and he'll let you on. I talked to a guy who told me about this and his buddies shot a few nice bulls doing this. I'd also look at Boyce. Steve Boyce is a friend and he drew a land owner tag and got a nice one a few years ago. But I'd call Chris Faber. That's what I'll do when I draw. But let me tell you, my dad drew the cow tag for Chris's and we hiked out butts off but didn't see a single elk! So don't let the "private land is easy" get to you. It's not an easy hunt. Chris is a good dude. I grew up with his brothers family. The one plus to Cow Creek are the deer. I saw one up there that was big, very big. I haven't seen many big deer, but this guy would be it! Good luck man! One day I'll draw!

Yeah there's no public land there or very little. But I'd call Chris and talk to him. There is a spot of public just east of Big Sandy just south of Fabers. It's one small knob but it might hold elk. I saw some sign there but it was way old.

I have a friend who hunted on faber two years ago a killed a monster....problem is I refuse to pay $2500 to him to hunt elk that I feel are public property, and that's exactly what he charges to tell you where and when you can hunt, and your a fool if you think his guide clients aren't gettin first choice. To be honest you are the first person I've heard say anything nice about Chris. Simple fact is I've called three times and left him messages to find out for myself and he hasn't answered or bothered to call back.....

Yeah a few years ago I tried to set up a cow hunt and didn't get a call back. But it was my own fault trying to call during the season. Yep I'm sure the clients paying 10k for a bull get first pick. If you want I get you a number for Boyce just shoot me a pm. Yeah my uncles ranches on Beaver Creek and Chris leases the land to the south... My uncle and a lot of the other ranchers aren't fans of Fabers. Honestly outfitters are the least liked people in the state regardless of where they are. They are trying to make a living but they step on a lot of toes. The problem I've heard about that tag also is people get it then end up shooting a bull they could have taken on any given FS OTC hunt.

Joe

Lol, well you are asking for info on one of the best kept elk secrets in Montana. Don't expect a bunch of free info on a public forum.

FYI, if you go to the Helena FWP office you can get a list of all of the previous tag holders...
