Been working on some mild loads for the 300 win mag. Stuff to practice different positions and reading the wind and the like.

Been running 45grains of h4895 behind a 150gr sst. Real ez on the shoulder, 0 brass stretch, neck size only.

Accuracy is about 1.25" to 1.5" at 100, totally vertical.

Gun likes 60gr but honestly it's not a huge decrease in recoil to make it worth it.

Mag box won't allow much coal latitude.

Any hints on wringing a bit more accuracy? Or Any other powders and bullets I should look at?

Often times the loads posted in the Nosler manual will have the lighter loads being more accurate in their testing - there's no way of knowing how much more accurate but it's another perspective

How mild do you want to go?

I've got some great load data for small game loads in a .30 cal that recoil about like a .22 & have been universally accurate (+/-1") in every rifle I've tried them in.......

sounds like some of the loads we used to play with back in the day using cast bullets with gas checks in a 30-30. a lot of fun. think we used unique pistol powder

That's pretty much exactly what they are, but with the little 90gn, half jackets bullets designed for the .30 carbine over Unique/2400

Sure!
I shoot these bullets....
Hornady Manufacturing Company :: Bullets :: Rifle :: Choose by Caliber :: .308 30 CAL :: 30 Cal .308 100 gr Short Jacket
Over 7gn of Unique. Gets around 1000-1100 fps in a 20" barrel. Recoil is on par with a .22mag & it's been outstandingly accurate in every rifle I've loaded it for.

For a little hotter load, try a 150gn, any style, over 10gn of 2400 for pretty much the same velocity. Recoil is like a light .223 & it'll generally print under 2"@100.

These super light loads are a lot of fun, but be 110% sure to check every case to prevent a double charge. I drop powder & seat each bullet, one case at a time. I don't think 14gn of Unique would blow up a strong rifle, but I don't wanna find out!

If you don't know what a "squib" load is then check that out before getting too deep into "mild loads" - a stacked bullet having the next bullet hit it can ruin your day in a very big way

Not looking for that light of loads, but that would be kinda pretty fun.

I bought a lee dipper set, used a 4cc dipper in h4895 55gr was average throw, 150gr sst. sorted my brass by weight and was breaking 1/2 mil rocks no problem today at 500. Estimated velocity is 2850.

Used the same pieces of brass 5 times with no stretch whatsoever. Necksize only.

Learning the wind with a light load isn't going to help as much with your hunting load as you might think.

A 1:8 twist 223 with 75's is a pretty good tool for that. Especially when the flight pattern essentially matches my 270 load.

But having said that, all trigger time pays.

How does a 75gr .4 bc bullet going 2850 beat a 150gr .415 bullet going 2750? Nearly identical.

Except one is 1/2 MOA and the other is a MOA and a half, half the powder and twice the fun. IMHO.

How does your hunting load compare?

Might not work for most, but I've dialed way back to keep it as simple as possible.

Something around .430 going around 2,900 and targets no further than 500, food no more than 330. 223 for fun, 270 for groceries.

Easy peasy for me-sy....

Couple things you might try is a heavier bullet and/or a different bullet. I'd try Sierras.

16bore I get the logic. Have a 223 for blasting shit, shoots 77gr tmk 10 shot groups under 3/4".. I dunno maybe it's just me but I get bored with 223. We'd shoot a case a week back in my roughneckin and fishing days.

I'm a one gun travelling kinda guy nowadays. If I go to Africa or to Alaska or New Zealand or west Texas I bring the 300 win mag. 2 boxes of the good stuff and a few boxes of sight in and target shooting ammo. Used to be ppu 150gr.

Mild load is practice and goat killing load. Sorted brass by weight and sat powder charge right at 54.9 grains groups are right at 1 Moa.

That works. I gave up reloading, so it can get a little limited. Ran out of give a shit for a lot of it too. If it won't die with a 223 or 270 inside of 330, I'm not shooting at it.

If I remember right Sierra 155 are sweet with a jump. Bit pricey for my needs tho

Like I said I just sorted by weight and 54.9 grains shoots an inch. That'll work for my needs.

How I sorta figured it out was weight out hornadys reduced recoil load, and replicated it with h4895.

Update: Been mucking around with this for a bit, I got plenty of time on my hands.

1" was okay but I knew it could be better. 5 shots, 38 grains h4895. 1cm center to center. Virtually no recoil.
