I am looking to "build" a mid-range (~500-600 yds and closer) western hunting rifle. Likely 7mm PRC or 300 WSM. I would like a 44mm objective lens scope, mainly to save weight but I would assume low light capabilities between a 44mm and 50mm would not be that different. I am up for any suggestions, but right now I am between a Zeiss Conquest V4 4-16x44 and a Vortex Viper HD 3-15x44. I am leaning towards Zeiss, but the main thing that is good with Vortex is the warranty. Would love to hear thoughts on those two or any other that are comparable. Looking at spending around $1000-$1500.

Maven RS1.2

Proven durability

Maven RS1.2
SWFA 3-15

And you don’t need a 7 PRC or a 300 WSM for the distances you’re talking. Better scope, smaller chambering, more practice, more deadly.

My friend has the Maven scope and the 80mm spotting scope and the glass on the Maven’s are very impressive. I have the Vortex Viper HST and Maven beats it hands down.

Based on a ton of reading on here Trijicons and Nightforce are the buys I made. Both seem great but I prefer the Nightforce shv I bought over the Trijicon credo. I have a Vortex lpvo that I liked once I got it dialed in. But it didn't get there easy. I will avoid them for scopes in the future

I have the Maven 1.2 and a Bushnell LRHS. Both are much better than a Vortex Viper, both are capable well beyond the described distance.

You could buy an SWFA fixed 6x and be fine to that distance. Their 3-9x is also currently in stock and totally adequate to 500-600.

GA Precision has the Gen 2 LRHS in stock.

Forget the warranty...

Buyers should be aware the Athlon is made in China. Look at the Maven 1.2, SWFA 3-15 and Tract Toric 2.5-15. All three are excellent scopes with good reputations for holding zero, dialing accurately, and durability.

I am setting up a rifle for the exact ranges you listed. My rifle is a tikka t3x superlite in .243 win 8 twist. I’m topping it with a 10x42 Swfa. I am an open country western hunter so the fixed 10x will fill my needs just fine. If you are not into fixed power scopes, then I would recommend the Swfa 3-9. That would more than take care of your needs and you can take the money you saved and invest it into more ammo. You will need it shooting a 7prc or 300 wsm 😂.

$1500 gets you into used Territory for a Nightforce NX8/NXS and new on the Nightforce SHV F1.

The RS1.2 is a solid option.

I think the SWFA 3-9x42HD is fantastic for $600.

Zeiss is not a good option, they aren’t durable and they are dated designs.

Vortex is not a good option, that’s the nicest way to put it.

6.5 CM will give you 1,800 FPS (lethality) out to 650 yards on a 24" barrel (~600 yards on a 20" barrel) using factory ammo. 50% less recoil energy so you can practice more and spot your shots.

Cant go wrong with either - Leupy has a great lightweight options and warranty.
